The principal objective of this investigation "An investigation into the lexical density and readability of Non-English majored first-year students’ writing at Hanoi National University of Education" is to evaluate the lexical density and readability in the writings of first-year Mathematics-majored students with dual major in English at Hanoi National University of Education. The study shows that students can only achieve the average level of both lexical density and readability, which suggests that they need to enhance their writing skills with more complex grammar and vocabulary.

The research reveals a quantifiable evaluation of the lexical resources, tapping into the mutual and exclusive words, as well as examining lexical complexity of the two sets of textbooks. Unlike conventional textbook reviews focusing on grammar, this study is one of the first attempts to evaluate textbooks efficiency from corpus linguistics perspective, which in turn contributes to the improvement of the current English textbooks in Viet Nam, as well as a source of consideration for curriculum design worldwide.

Academic writing is complex in that it involves more than grammar. It involves familiarity with the writing conventions of university culture and disciplinary subcultures in which the second/foreign language learner participates (Schneider & Fujishima, 1995). Ballard and Clanchy (1984) found that while a student is inducted into a particular discipline through lectures, discussions, and laboratory work, it is through the written assignments that success is most commonly judged.

Writing is a skill, and like other skills, it has to be acquired. Writing is important to convey ideas, give instructions, share and preserve knowledge and so on. Although writing is very important, in most cases, it is never considered as an important skill. Writing is not just about using correct spelling, organizing words and ideas and following grammar, it is much more than that.Widdowson (1978) describes writing as the use of the visual medium to manifest the graphological and grammatical system of the language. This paper presents a method for parsing associative Lambek grammars based on graphtheoretic properties. Connection graphs, which are a simplified version of proof-nets, are actually a mere conservative extension of the earlier method of syntactic connexion, discovered by Ajduckiewicz [1935]. The method amounts to find alternating spanning trees in graphs. A sketch of an algorithm for finding such a tree is provided. Interesting properties of time-complexity for this method are expected.
