The authors of this text have nearly thirty years of academic and general practice experience to guide them, and with this in mind it was thought that they could contribute a work of value to practitioners for reference, and for students, to supplement both lectures and practical studies. In order to achieve this goal much has been treated in note form, and particular sections such as materials, bridgework and precision attachments require reference to specialist texts.

The pioneering work of Bra˚ nemark ushered in a new era in dentistryd the era of implant dentistry. Bra˚ nemark and his colleagues created a new field of study from a serendipitous research observation, thus exemplifying Pasteur’s dictum that ‘‘chance favors the prepared mind.’’ Through further research, these investigators transformed the field of implantology from an unpredictable art to a well-grounded clinical science. This research provided the scientific basis for a set of strict clinical protocols.

Most students need a textbook that will provide all the basic facts within a discipline and that also facilitates understanding of the subject. This textbook achieves these objectives and also provides test questions for the student to explore their level of knowledge. It is also important for students to achieve a 'feel for the subject' and learn communication skills. The book is designed to provide basic information necessary to pass an undergraduate examination in restorative, paediatric and orthodontic dentistry.
