Conversational exchanges

The study aims at making a conversation analysis of interruptions in the three rounds of the 2008 U.S. presidential debates, and then giving some theoretical and pedagogical implications for utilizing interruptions in debates as well as other challenging and competitive speech exchanges.

The method of qualitative content analysis is applied to expose categories of verbal strategies emerging from the data. The results reveal that, compared with English subjects, Vietnamese ones create a much lengthier opening with the use of more number of verbal strategies. Especially, through the process of opening a conversation, English subjects display a formal relationship with work-oriented exchanges whilst Vietnamese ones show a close but respectful relationship with rapport-oriented exchanges.

Paper format The Speaking test contains four parts. 15 minutes. 4. Two candidates and two examiners. One examiner acts as both interlocutor and assessor and manages the interaction either by asking questions or by providing cues for candidates. The other acts as assessor and does not join in the conversation. Short exchanges with the interlocutor and with the other candidate; a one-minute ‘long turn’; a collaborative task involving the two candidates; a three-way discussion.
