The objectives of the study were to determine the effect of three compost types i.e. Accra compost and recycling plant (ACARP) compost; decentralised compost (DeCo) and composted deep litter chicken manure (CDLCM) on heavy metals concentrations in roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) and jute mallow (Corchorus olitorius L.) and the health risk of these vegetables to adults and children.

Water retting of whole jute (Corchorus olitorius L.) plant is convenient to the majority of farmers. Jute bundles are extensively retted in isolated stagnant inland freshwater bodies, often having insufficient water, during the months of August–October in the Indo-Bangla subcontinent. It leads to transportation expense, improper retting with low fibre quality, complete loss of huge organic retting residue and transitory deterioration of the aquatic environment affecting local ecology.

The present investigation was carried out to assess the impact of different jute based cropping systems on soil quality in farmers’ fields. Soil samples (georeferenced) were collected at 0-0.2 m depth from the farmers’ fields following the jute based cropping systems for more than five years. Soil quality was evaluated in terms of physico-chemical and biological attributes of soils.

Jute cultivation is a labour-intensive activity. Small and marginal farmers extensively practice high density sowing (HDS) by broadcasting jute seed. High plant stand due to HDS at emergence increases major operational expenses of weeding and thinning, sorting and fibre extraction. Cultivated species of jute (Corchorus olitorius L. and Corchorus capsularis L.) are distinct in their growth and characteristics related to dry matter and fibre yield. The present study was planned to evaluate 77 varieties of jute including two checks, each of C. capsularis and C. olitorius. Characterizations of genotypes of both the species were also carried out on the basis of five marketable traits with their correlation and cluster analysis of them to study the diversity pattern, based on these characters.

Relay cropping may play an important role for crop productivity and environmental sustainability in modern agriculture if its proper timing of sowing of relay crop system is standardised. A field study was carried out during 2016-17 at the Central Research Farm of the Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya with seven treatments where jute as relay crop (sown in between 15, 20, 25, 30, 35 days old mungbean) was compared with sole jute and sole mungbean.

Results from light, scanning, and transmission electron microscopic examination of CaOx crystal formation in 2 plant species, namely Corchorus olitorius L. and Malva parviflora L., revealed the presence of crystalline deposits. These deposits were of prismatic type in the case of C. olitorius and of druse type in the case of M. parviflora.
