Ebook "Surface patterning with colloidal monolayers" introduces approaches for both challenges: It establishes a simple yet effective way to crystallize colloidal monolayers over large areas by employing the air/water interface in a process that can be repeated without any special equipment in laboratories around the world and introduces methodologies to prepare complex, functional structures from very simple starting materials.

Ebook "Unimolecular and supramolecular electronics I: Chemistry and physics meet at metal-molecule interfaces" bring together many of the leading practitioners of the art (in each case I mention only the main author). Bassler sets in order the theoretical understanding of electron transport in disordered (semi)-conducting polymers. Saito summarizes in fantastic detail the progress in understanding charge-transfer crystals and organic superconductivity.

LCD basically consists of a layer of liquid crystal, sandwiched between two polarizing plates. The polarizers are aligned perpendicular to each other (one vertical and the other horizontal), so that the light incident on the first polarizer will be blocked by the second. This is because a polarizer plate only passes photons (quanta of light) with their electric fields aligned parallel to the polarizing direction of that plate.

The crystallization kinetics of an Al80Fe20 amorphous powder alloy were investigated by thermal analysis. Crystallization of amorphous Al80Fe20 during continuous heating undergoes four stages. The first-stage crystallization leads to the formation of fcc-Al from amorphous matrix. The next stages are the decomposition of the residual amorphous phase into several intermetallic compounds. The activation energies of the alloy were calculated from differential scanning calorimetry data using the Kissinger, Ozawa and Augis–Bennett models.

The interface between thec-subunit oligomer and the asubunit in the F0sector of the ATP synthase is believed to formthe core of the rotatingmotor powered by the protonic ¯ow. Besides the essential cAsp61 and aArg210 residues (Escherichia colinumbering), a few other residues at this interface, although nonessential, show a high degree of conservation, among these aGlu219.

Bovine seminal ribonuclease (BS-RNase) is the only known dimeric enzyme characterized by an equilibrium between two different 3D structures: MxM, with exchange (or swapping) of the N-terminal 1–20 residues, and M¼M, without exchange. As a consequence, the hinge region 16–22 has a different tertiary structure in the two forms. In the native protein, the equilibrium ratio between MxM and M¼M is about 7 : 3.

To learn about the correlation between allostery and ligand binding of the Tet repressor (TetR) we analyzed the effect of mutations in the DNA read-ing head–core interface on the effector specific TetR i2 variant. The same mutations in these subdomains can lead to completely different activities, e.g. the V99G exchange in the wild-type leads to corepression by 4-ddma-atc without altering DNA binding. However, in TetR i2 it leads to 4-ddma-atc dependent repression in combination with reduced DNA binding in the absence of effector. ...

High-resolution X-ray diffraction structures of integral membrane proteins have revealed various binding modes of lipids, but current spectroscopic studies still use uniform macroscopic binding constants to describe lipid binding. The Adair approach employing microscopic lipid-binding con-stants has previously been taken to explain the enhancement of agonist binding to the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor by general anaesthetics in terms of the competitive displacement of essential lipid activator molecules [Walcher S, Altschuh J & Sandermann H (2001) J. Biol. Chem. 276, 42191–42195]....

Crystal structures of the regulatory subunit of Thr-sensitive aspartate kinase (AK; EC 2.7.2.4) fromThermus thermophilus(TtAKb) were deter-mined at 2.15 A˚ in the Thr-bound form (TtAKb-Thr) and at 2.98 A ˚ in the Thr-free form (TtAKb-free). Although both forms are crystallized as dimers, the contact surface area of the dimer interface in TtAKb-free (3200 A ˚ 2 ) is smaller than that of TtAKb-Thr (3890 A ˚ 2 ).
