The present investigation was under taken during rabi 2014-15 under rice fallow condition at District Seed Farm Kalyani, BCKV, W.B. Fifteen elite genotypes of chickpea (3 kabuli and 12 desi) were taken to evaluate and select the better yielding genotype(s) based on the nodulation behavior as well as root morphology, suitable for new alluvial zone of West Bengal and also to estimate the correlation among different underground and above ground agromorphic traits including yield.

Keeping the importance of the crop and the aspects to be studied, the present investigation entitled “Genetic Character Variability Studies in Desi Chickpea (Cicer Arietinum L.) Genotypes)”was conducted in rabi2014-15 at the Research Farm of Agricultural Research Station, Ummedganj, Kota, Agricultural University, Kota to assess the variance revealed sufficient amount of variability present in the genotypes studied. Harvest index recorded maximum phenotypic range of variation followed by 100 seed weight, number of pods per plant, plant height and number of nodules per plant.

Ninty green chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) genotypes were evaluated for genetic potential, heritability, genetic advance, and traits association of yield contributing characters during 2016-2017 at ARS Kalaburgi, University of agricultural science Raichur, Karnataka, India. The experiment was carried out in augmented design; data were recorded on days to 50% flowering, pods per plant, seeds per pod, number of primary branches /plant, number of secondary branches/ plant, 100-seed weight and seed yield /plant.

A systematic and comparative study on mutagenic ability of different doses of ethyl methane sulphonate (EMS, an alkylating agent), gamma rays (an ionizing radiation) and EMS + gamma rays was carried out in a well-adapted desi chickpea variety HPG17. All mutagenic treatments were effective in inducing genetic variability. A proportional decrease in germination of mutagen treated seeds as well as subsequent plant survival was observed with increase in mutagen dose.

Wilt (Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. ciceris) is considered as one of the major factors for low productivity of chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.). In order to address the problem, germinated seeds of ‘Desi’ chickpea cv. JG-62 were inoculated with a conidial suspension (root dip) of highly virulent Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. ciceris (Foc) race 4, three days after germination (DAG).

An experiment was conducted during Rabi 2016-17 at Pulses Research farm, Bihar Agricultural University, Sabour (Bhagalpur) to study the existing genetic diversity in thirty six Desi chickpea genotypes under normal sown condition. All the genotypes were grouped into seven clusters as per Ward minimum variance method revealed the presence of considerable amount of genetic diversity in the material with each other for different yield and yield attributing traits.

An experiment was conducted during Rabi, 2016-17 at Pulses Research farm, Bihar Agricultural University, Sabour (Bhagalpur), Bihar to study the correlation and path analysis for grain yield and its component characters in thirty six desi chickpea genotypes. The correlation study revealed that grain yield per plant was found significantly and positively correlated with number of primary branches, number of secondary branches, biological yield, harvest index, 100 seed weight and days to maturity, under normal sown condition.

The oviposition preference of H. armigera moths towards different genotypes of chickpea was studied under no choice, dual-choice and multichoice conditions in the laboratory at ICRISAT. Desi type genotypes (ICC 12475, ICC 12476, ICC 12477, ICC 12478, ICC 12479, ICC 12490 and ICC 14876) were not preferred for oviposition compared to kabuli type genotypes (ICC 12491, ICC 12493, ICC 12494, ICC 12495, ICC 12968, ICC 4973 and ICC 4962). The lines showing high and stable resistance to H. armigera can be used in chickpea improvement programs.

Chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) the third most important food legume of the world and India is the leading producer and consumer of chickpea contributing to about 70% of the world chickpea production. Like other green leafy vegetables, chickpea leaves also contain good amount of minerals and powerful antioxidants. Phenolic agents are major class of antioxidants that are found in plant foods at very high concentration. Stages of maturity of leaves may effect on their mineral composition and antioxidants activity.

Generally plant breeders select the parents on the basis of phenotypic divergence, but for effective breeding, the knowledge of genetic diversity among the parents with respect to the characters which are to be improved is essential. The present investigation entitled, “Genetic Divergence Studies in Chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.)” has been carried out. The genotypes under study fall into seven clusters. The cluster III was with the highest number of genotypes (11) followed by cluster II (10), clusters V (09), cluster VI (06) and IV and VII had one genotype.
