  • Work at the Unit for Computer Research on the Eaglish Language at the University of Lancaster has been directed towards producing a grammatically snnotated version of the Lancaster-Oslo/ Bergen (LOB) Corpus of written British English texts as the prel~minary stage in developing computer programs and data files for providing a grammatical analysis of -n~estricted English text. From 1981-83, a suite of PASCAL programs was devised to automatically produce a single level of grammatical description with one word tag representing the word class or part of speech of each word token in the corpus.

  • We describe GLP, a chart parser that will be used as a SYNTAX module of the Erlangen Speech Understanding System. GLP realizes an agenda-based multiprocessing scheme, which allows easily to apply various parsing strategies in a transparent way. We discuss which features have been incorporated into the parser in order to process speech data, in particular the ability to perform direction independent island parsing, to handle gaps in the utterance and its hypothesis scoring scheme.

  • We place synchronous tree-adjoining grammars and tree transducers in the single overarching framework of bimorphisms, continuing the unification of synchronous grammars and tree transducers initiated by Shieber (2004). Along the way, we present a new definition of the tree-adjoining grammar derivation relation based on a novel direct inter-reduction of TAG and monadic macro tree transducers.

  • In this paper, we explore statistical language modelling for a speech-enabled MP3 player application by generating a corpus from the interpretation grammar written for the application with the Grammatical Framework (GF) (Ranta, 2004). We create a statistical language model (SLM) directly from our interpretation grammar and compare recognition performance of this model against a speech recognition grammar compiled from the same GF interpretation grammar.

  • We describe an implementation integrating a spoken dialogue system with a mobile robot, which the user can direct to specific locations, ask for information about its status, and supply information about its environment. The robot uses an internal map for navigation, and communicates its current orientation and accessible locations to the dialogue system using a topological map as interface. processing, language modelling, language understanding and dialogue management have been implemented. 2.1 Speech Recognition Nuance's speaker-independent speech recognition system (www.. nuance . ...

  • cannot be correctly produced by the text to speech system. To alleviate some of these problems, we modified Direction Assistance to make both attentional and intentional information about the route description available for the assignment of intonational features. With this information, we generate spoken directions using the Bell Labo~ ratories Text-to-Speech System[21] in which pitch range, accent placement, phrasing, and tune can be varied to communicate attentional and intentional structure. ...

  • These are special words and phrases directly indicating the structure of the argument to the hearer. Two main conclusions are drawn: I) clue words can occur in conjunction with coherent transmissions, to reduce processing of the hearer 2) clue words must occur with more complex forms of transmission, to facilitate recognition of the argument structure. Interpretation rules to process clues are proposed. In addition, a relationship between use of clues and complexity of processing is suggested for the case of exceptional transmission strategies. ...

  • During thc past two decades, much work in linguistics has focused on sentences as minimal units of communication, and the project of rigorously characterizing the structure of sentences in natural language has met with some succcss. Not surprisingly, however, sentcnce grammars have contributed little to the analysis of discourse, Human discourse consists not just of words in sequences, hut of words in sequences directed by a speaker to an addressee, used to represent situations and to reveal intentions.

  • In this paper, we report on an effort to provide a general-purpose spoken language generation tool for Concept-to-Speech (CTS) applications by extending a widely used text generation package, FUF/SURGE, with an intonation generation component. As a first step, we applied machine learning and statistical models to learn intonation rules based on the semantic and syntactic information typically represented in FUF/SURGE at the sentence level. The results of this study are a set of intonation rules learned automatically which can be directly implemented in our intonation generation component.

  • We propose a language model based on a precise, linguistically motivated grammar (a hand-crafted Head-driven Phrase Structure Grammar) and a statistical model estimating the probability of a parse tree. The language model is applied by means of an N-best rescoring step, which allows to directly measure the performance gains relative to the baseline system without rescoring. To demonstrate that our approach is feasible and beneficial for non-trivial broad-domain speech recognition tasks, we applied it to a simplified German broadcast-news transcription task.
