  • A field experiment was conducted during Kharif 2010-11 at the Main Agricultural Research Station, University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad to study the response of secondary treated distillery spentwash on physiological and quality parameters of Bt cotton under rainfed condition. Result indicated that application of 1.5 N through distillery spentwash significantly increased the total dry matter production (339.7 g plant-1 ), leaf area (51.3 dm2 plant-1 ), LAI (0.95), good opened bolls plant-1 (31.2) and yield (2566.1 kg ha-1 ), but was on par with 1 N through spentwash.

  • The increasing cost of microbial growth media has necessitated continuous search for more readily available culture media at affordable prices. The agricultural based industries are generate significant quantities of organic wastes and it is necessary to convert them to useful end products. It is now realized that these waste could be utilized as cheap raw materials for some industries or used as cheap substrates for microbiological processes.

  • Currently more than 20 per cent of the world’s irrigated land is salt affected. Of that about 60 per cent are sodic soils, warranting attention for efficient, inexpensive and environmentally feasible amelioration. An incubation study was performed to study the influence of amendments on physico-chemical and biological properties of sodic soil. Gypsum + Green manure @ 6.5 t ha-1 , Distillery spentwash (DSW)@ 5 lakhs liter-1 , Green leaf manure (GLM) @ 12.5 t ha-1were used as amendments for the reclamation of sodic soil by adopting standardized reclamation procedure.
