This study aimed to gain an understanding of negative L1 transfer on the use of English prepositions from a CL perspective. Since there is a vast difference between English and Vietnamese prepositions both in their cognition and the structure of the two languages, Vietnamese learners might transfer some of their cognition from their language, culture, and lived experience to their English usage.

This study aims to investigate the language used for denoting graduation in English literary discourse. Basing on the theoretical framework of Appraisal proposed by Martin and White (2005), it lays its focus particularly on how intensification as graduation is realized via linguistic and stylistic means in English literary discourse. A comparison among expressions for intensification is established to recognize what sub-groups are preferable to be used in this type of discourse.

The thesis aims at examining the metaphors of season in English and Vietnamese songs in the light of Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT). Subsequently, a comparison is made to find out the similarities and differences between the conceptual metaphors of season in English and Vietnamese song lyrics when SEASON is treated as a target domain as well as a source domain. Simultaneously, several explanations are given as causes for these similarities and differences.
