Investigation of effective approaches for supporting students’ linguistic and intercultural competence in the process of learning English as an international lingua franca has generally been an issue of great concern for teachers and researchers in language education. The paper finally puts forward the suggestion that short literary texts of cultures around the world might be considered as one of the meaningful inputs in B1 EFL classrooms.

This study aimed to determine the effects of self-questioning on pre-intermediate EFL students’ reading comprehension and explore their perceptions of learning to read with selfquestioning. A quasi-experimental design was carried out among two groups of sixty-eight Vietnamese pre-intermediate students over a nine-week reading course using self-questioning and teacher-posed questions.

The study "Common IELTS reading strategies used by ESL/EFL students" aims to explore different types of reading strategies which are commonly employed by IELTS candidates. The findings indicate that students frequently utilize underlining/highlighting, translation, prediction, rereading, skimming/scanning, question check, summarizing, word guessing, and keyword identification whereas note-taking methods, memory/social strategies, meaning guessing of advanced vocabulary, and grammatical features are not preferable.

A plethora of studies have been conducted to examine the relationship between EFL students’ use of strategies and reading comprehension. Findings from those studies agree on a consensus that reading strategies possess a significant relationship with reading performance. The present study evaluates the effect of test format on the performance of reading comprehension, which is the integrated format. Unlike the separation of text and test questions into two sections in the split format, the main modification of the integrated format is that the relevant text is integrated with test questions in each reading task. Through the comparison between learners’ performance in the two test formats, this study tests the hypothesis that the overall test performance and task performance in the integrated format are higher than performance in the split format.
