Brinjal or eggplant is the fourth most important vegetable crop in India in terms of production; India being its second highest producing country with 23.7% of world’s total share. Collar rot disease is proving to be a constraint for brinjal production with yield losses upto 30%. The pathogen Sclerotium rolfsii is able to attack all stages of the crop and is difficult to manage. A study was undertaken to investigate the efficacy of botanicals and bioagents in the management of the disease.

Fruit rot of brinjal caused by Alternaria alternata is an important disease of eggplant inflicting heavy losses. The present investigation was carried out to test the efficacy of fungicides, botanicals and bio-agents in vitro. Among fungicides tested, tebuconazole, difenconazole showed 100 per cent mycelial inhibition of Alternaria alternata.

Eggplant (Solanum melongena L.) is an important Solanaceous crop widely grown in different parts of the country. Incidence of Phomopsis fruit rot was observed at 39th standard week (October 2016) till 3rd standard week (January 2017) and incidence ranged from 2.0-22.0%. Almost 10 time increase in fruit rot was recorded within 30 days during October 2016 when the average temperature 23.65ºC with 55.5% relative humidity having 9.3 sunshine hours.

Brinjal (Solanum melongena L.) also known as eggplant is a popular vegetable crop grown worldwide. The most destructive and important disease on brinjal is fruit rot incited by the fungus, Phomopsis vexans (Sacc. & Syd.) Harter. The fruit rot adversely affects the fruit quality and quantity reducing the market value. A total of 20 isolates of P. vexans were obtained from Ri-Bhoi district of Meghalaya. All the isolates were found pathogenic to brinjal.

An investigation was carried out to study the interfamily variability for nine different growth and yield parameters from the cross Green Long x IIHR-3 with ten pre-breeding lines of F4 generation of green long eggplant. Low PCV and GCV were recorded for plant height, days to 50 per cent flowering, fruit length and fruit breadth.

The pyrimidine derivative (4,6-dimethyl-N-phenyldiethyl pyrimidine, DPDP) was tested as a foliar spray fungicide at 50 mg l1 for protection of eggplant (Solanum melongena) from spot disease caused by Alternaria alternata. Varied concentrations of DPDP (10–50 mg l1 ) differentially inhibited mycelial growth, conidial count and conidial germination of A. alternata growth in vitro; the magnitude of inhibition increased with increasing concentration.

Ralstonia solanacearum is an aerobic non-sporing, Gram-negative plant pathogenic bacterium. R.solanacearum is soil-borne and motile with a polar flagellar tuft. It colonises the xylem, causing bacterial wilt in a very wide range of potential host plants. It is known as Granville wilt when it occurs in tobacco. Bacterial wilts of tomato, pepper, eggplant and Irish potato caused by Ralstonia solanacearum were among the first diseases that Erwin Frink Smith proved to be caused by a bacterial pathogen.
