  • Since the maintenance-free sealed nickel/cadmium accumulator became of high importance in the market, in the middle of the 1950s (Figure 17.1), the German battery company Sonnenschein has invented the first maintenance-free portable lead-acid batteries in small sizes in modules of 2 to 12 V between 1 and about 30 Ah. These batteries have been absolutely maintenance free and because of their immobilized electrolyte they could be used in any position without leakage.

  • Introduction: Other than in solutions or in ionic liquids, ionic conduction can take place in the solid state also. The solids that exhibit ionic conduction are called ‘solid-state ionic conductors’. Based on the charge of ionic species responsible for the conduction, they are divided into cationic and anionic conductors; then, based on specific species involved in the conduction, they are further subdivided into sodium ion conductors, proton conductors, fluorine ion conductors, and so on.

  • Introduction: The rapid growth of the miniature electronic and computer-related industries has led to great demand for smaller and lighter batteries with improved safety, energy, and power characteristics. Lithium polymer batteries are expected to meet the above requirements and are thus considered as next-generation rechargeable batteries. The conventional lithium-ion batteries, which contain a large amount of liquid electrolyte, emit an appreciable amount of gas and this is attributed to the decomposition of a protective layer at the carbon surface. ...

  • Introduction: The electrolyte solution is a major component of all battery systems and as such will greatly influence energy densities (thermodynamic properties such as Gibbs energy, enthalpy, and ionic activity) and power densities (nonthermodynamic properties such as viscosity, conductivity, and transference). The electrolyte solution consists of a liquid or solid phase containing at least one component, e.g., water, which is called the solvent, and an ionizable substance, e.g., a salt or an acid, which is called the electrolyte. ...

  • Double-layer carbon supercapacitors (electrochemical double-layer capacitor (EDLCs)) based on two carbon electrodes of high surface area separated by an electrolyte are the most popular electrochemical supercapacitors. The charge process is electrostatic with charge separation at the two electrode–electrolyte interfaces. The EDLCs can thus be modeled with two capacitances in series with what is called equivalent series resistance (ESR).

  • This paper describes the corrosion behaviour of the positive and negative electrodes of a lead–acid battery in 5 M H2SO4 with binary additives such as mixtures of phosphoric acid and boric acid, phosphoric acid and tin sulphate, and phosphoric acid and picric acid. The effect of these additives is examined from the Tafel polarisation curves, double layer capacitance and percentage of inhibition efficiency.

  • The origin of the electrolytic capacitor or condenser can be traced to the second half of the 19th century when the discovery was made (Wheatstone, Buff, Ducretet) that a film can be formed on aluminum electrochemically and that it will exhibit unidirectional electrical conductance and other peculiar properties. One of the early attempted applications of the electrolytic capacitor was in conjunction with the starting of single-phase induction motors; efforts were also made to utilize it for power factor correction in alternating current circuits.

  • This paper is devoted to the development of a new lead acid battery electrolyte formulation for cycling applications, especially for renewable energy markets in developing countries. These emerging markets, such as solar home systems, require lead acid batteries at very low prices and improved performances compared to automotive batteries produced locally. The new acid formulation developed is a mixture of sulphuric acid, liquid colloidal silica and other additives including phosphoric acid.

  • For decades, valve regulated lead acid batteries with gel electrolyte have proved their excellent performance in deep cycling applications. However, their higher cost, when compared with flooded batteries, has limited their use in cost sensitive applications, such as automotive or PV installations. The use of flooded batteries in deep or partial state of charge working conditions leads to limited life due to premature capacity loss provoked by electrolyte stratification.

  • The concentrations and charge strength of "spectator“ or non-reacting electrolytes The tendency to form precipitates will be decreased with increasing ionic strength 1) interactions (but not necessarily reactions) of the reactant species with other charged species 2) interactions of the charged product species with the spectator ions. H2O + H2CO3 H3O+ + HCO3Ka1 increases with increasing ionic strength, so the solution becomes more acidic.
