  • In ebook "The chemistry of the catalyzed hydrogenation of carbon monoxide" the energy shock of the early seventies has been healthy and of great conse quences in chemistry. Large amounts of research money have been put to work since, and our knowledge of the possibilities and limitations of coal-based chemistry has increased enormously. During several years it appeared inap propriate to write a monograph about a topic which was in the midst of such an impetuous development.

  • In this paper a Pooled Ordinary Least Square model has been considered for some Southeast Asia countries in order to study the direct effects of world oilprice shocks and real interest rate on inflation. Our results canbe summarized as follows: For seven Southeast Asian countries including Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines and Singapore, world crude oil price and real interest rate both have statistical significant negative impact on inflation.

  • The experience of previous oil price shocks has shown that these shocks can provide an important catalyst for policies to encourage demand reduction, substitution to other fuels, and development of new sources of energy supply.

  • Regulatory adjustments to acute and chronic temperature changes are highly important for aquatic ectotherms because temperature affects their metabolic rate as well as the already low oxygen concentration in water, which can upset their energy balance.

  • In this study, using annual data between 1970 and 2019, it was investigated whether per capita energy consumption affects per capita income asymmetrically or not by using the NARDL model. The feature that makes this study different from similar studies is that it interprets the short and long-term asymmetric effects with the analysis model used and makes a unique contribution to the literature.

  • This methodology makes it possible to identify the main specific characteristics of Russian MNCs and develop an investment strategy in the Russian energy sector in the current difficult times. Another result is a strategy for the development of the Russian energy sector in order to attract additional investment. The novelty of the article includes the implied methodology of investment attractiveness and evidence of the high investment attractiveness of the Russian energy sector even in unstable conditions, especially in the COVID economic shock.

  • Extracorporeal shock-wave therapy (ESWT), which can be divided into radial shock-wave therapy (RaSWT) and focused shock-wave therapy (FoSWT), has been widely used in clinical practice for managing orthopedic conditions. The aim of this study was to determine the clinical efficacy of ESWT for knee soft tissue disorders (KSTDs) and compare the efficacy of different shock-wave types, energy levels, and intervention durations.

  • This work is devoted to the experimental study of a glass/polyester composite laminate under impact shock. Based on a thermodynamic approach, the objective is the evaluation of specific interlaminar delamination energy in a multi-layer composite material under impact loading causing damage to it by cracking.

  • White-light coronagraphic images of Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) observed by SOHO/LASCO C2 have been used to estimate the density jump along the whole front of two CME-driven shocks. The two events are different in that the first one was a ‘‘radio-loud’’ fast CME, while the second one was a ‘‘radio quiet’’ slow CME. From the compression ratios inferred along the shock fronts, we estimated the Alfve´n Mach numbers for the general case of an oblique shock.

  • The rapid increase in the price of crude oil in recent years (as of 2005) and the resulting“sticker shock” at the gas pump have caused the scientific and engineering communitiesto finally understand that it is time for some reality checks on our priorities. Energyis the real problem that faces the world, and it will not be solved by the recent fads ofbiotechnology or nanotechnology. Energy consumption is the main producer of carbondioxide, so it is directly linked with the problem of global warming.

  • Most observers of the economy now accept that a major shift occurred during the 1970s. The rapid productivity growth of the postwar years came to an end—for reasons that are still being debated among economists and historians. Wage growth lagged, and the economy suffered multiple shocks from energy prices and rapid inflation. The surge of births in the postwar baby boom meant that the labor force grew rapidly, while women were entering the labor force in numbers unprecedented in peacetime.

  • The objective of this book is to acquaint the reader with explosive driven pulsed power devices, theory and applications. This includes those devices that convert the chemical energy stored in high explosives into electrical energy and that use shock waves generated by the explosives to release the energy stored in ferromagnetic or ferroelectric materials in the form of electrical energy. The reader might well ask why one should use explosive driven pulsed power for any application, since it is inherently single shot in nature.

  • Due to its superiority such as low access latency, low en- ergy consumption, light weight, and shock resistance, the success of flash memory as a storage alternative for mobile computing devices has been steadily expanded into personal computer and enterprise server markets with ever increas- ing capacity of its storage. As it has been witnessed in the past several years, two-fold annual increase in the density of NAND flash memory is expected to continue until year 2012 [11].

  • The most well-known contribution to the analysis of contagion through direct linkages in nancial systems is that of Allen and Gale (2000). 2 Using a network structure involving four banks, they demonstrate that the spread of contagion depends crucially on the pattern of interconnectedness between banks. When the network is complete, with all banks having exposures to each other such that the amount of interbank deposits held by any bank is evenly spread over all other banks, the impact of a shock is readily attenuated. Every bank takes a small `hit' and there is no contagion.

  • In modern nancial systems, an intricate web of claims and obligations links the balance sheets of a wide variety of intermediaries, such as banks and hedge funds, into a network structure. The advent of sophisticated nancial products, such as credit default swaps and collateralised debt obligations, has heightened the complexity of these balance sheet connections still further.

  • Renewable energy technologies—including solar, wind, biomass, geothermal, and hydropower—are in many ways attractive to policy makers who must address these market disruptions and the economic and social strife they can create. Renewable energy technologies are advantageous because they are immune to price shocks from fuel supply constraints and cartel pricing. Furthermore, renewable energy resources are much more environmentally benign than their conventional counterparts, such as coal, nuclear, and petroleum products.
