Most two-group statistical tests find broad patterns such as overall shifts in mean, median, or variance. These tests may not have enough power to detect effects in a small subset of samples, e.g., a drug that works well only on a few patients.

This study developed a gene signature associated with a malignant and common tumor of the urinary system, the Bladder Urothelial Carcinoma (BLCA). Methods: The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database was searched to obtain 414 BLCA samples and the expression spectra of 19 normal samples. Single-sample Gene Set Enrichment Analysis (ssGSEA) was conducted to determine the enrichment levels in the BLCA samples of the 29 immune genes.

The study aimed to isolate oil-degrading bacterial strains from the contaminated soil of Cam Ranh, Khanh Hoa, and develop a robust indigenous bacterial consortium for bioremediation of crude oil pollution. From a total of seven oil-polluted soil samples collected in Cam Ranh, after 3-fold enrichment in liquid mineral salt medium containing 5% crude oil mixed in diesel DO (w/v), 7 bacterial isolates were achieved.

This study determined the heavy metals enrichments and their possible sources in industrial sludges from different sampling time. The results show that industrial sludge exhibits very high pollution for some typical heavy metals, especially Cu and Cd.

The isolation of extracellular vesicles (EVs) from milk, a complex mixture of colloidal structures having a comparable size to EVs, is challenging. Although ultracentrifugation (UC) has been widely used for EV isolation, this has significant limitations, including a long processing time at high g-force conditions and large sample volume requirements.

The sensitivity of an active fast neutron assay system for the measurement of 235U enrichment in small samples of low-enriched triuranium octoxide (U3O8) is described. The system comprises four organic liquid scintillation detectors in a polyethylene container in which a stimulating americium-lithium neutron source is placed below the sample to be interrogated.

Efficient phosphoproteomic analysis of small amounts of biological samples (e.g. tissue biopsies) requires carefully selected enrichment and purification steps prior to the nanoflow HPLC-MS/MS analysis. Solidphase extraction (SPE) is one of the most commonly used approaches for sample preparation.

Sequencing errors are key confounding factors for detecting low-frequency genetic variants that are important for cancer molecular diagnosis, treatment, and surveillance using deep next-generation sequencing (NGS). However, there is a lack of comprehensive understanding of errors introduced at various steps of a conventional NGS workflow, such as sample handling, library preparation, PCR enrichment, and sequencing. In this study, we use current NGS technology to systematically investigate these questions.

This study evaluated the performance of a laboratory-scale inverse fluidised bed reactor (IFBR) for biological selenate reduction at 30◦C. The IFBR with floating biomass carriers was fed with synthetic mine water (pH 6.0–7.0) containing ~10 mM (1.4 g L− 1 ) selenate, nutrients and 10 mM ethanol as electron donor and inoculated with selenate reducers enriched from anaerobic sludge and environmental samples.

Adaptive sampling is a method of software-controlled enrichment unique to nanopore sequencing platforms. To test its potential for enrichment of rarer species within metagenomic samples, we create a synthetic mock community and construct sequencing libraries with a range of mean read lengths.

The method is successfully applied for ultrasensitive detection of trace amount benzophenone-type UV filters in environment water samples. It is indicated that the method has the advantages of rapid and efficient enrichment, high sensitivity, and excellent repeatability. Our study extends the application of core-shell mesoporous silica materials and would be of value for pretreatment of trace-amount and complex real samples.

Ribosomal RNA (rRNA) comprises at least 90% of total RNA extracted from mammalian tissue or cell line samples. Informative transcriptional profiling using massively parallel sequencing technologies requires either enrichment of mature poly-adenylated transcripts or targeted depletion of the rRNA fraction.

Bread wheat has a large complex genome that makes whole genome resequencing costly. Therefore, genome complexity reduction techniques such as sequence capture make re-sequencing cost effective. With a highquality draft wheat genome now available it is possible to design capture probe sets and to use them to accurately genotype and anchor SNPs to the genome.
