ESL reading strategies

The study "Common IELTS reading strategies used by ESL/EFL students" aims to explore different types of reading strategies which are commonly employed by IELTS candidates. The findings indicate that students frequently utilize underlining/highlighting, translation, prediction, rereading, skimming/scanning, question check, summarizing, word guessing, and keyword identification whereas note-taking methods, memory/social strategies, meaning guessing of advanced vocabulary, and grammatical features are not preferable.

This study investigated Vietnamese non-English majored students’ English reading strategy use and its relationship with their self-perceived English reading ability. Sixty-seven Vietnamese freshmen self-rated their reading ability and completed the Survey of Reading Strategies measuring their use of global, problem-solving, and support strategies.

This paper attempts to find out if there are any differences in the use of reading strategies between Vietnamese university students who learn English as a compulsory subject (EFL students) and those who use English as a means for their academic programs (ESL students) in their reading General English (GE) texts.
