The purpose of this study is to describe the actions taken by college students to face their future retirement. For this, the test designed by the National Commission for the Protection and Defense of Financial Services Users (CONDUSEF) in Mexico was used, which has items related to financial knowledge, specifically topics about savings, emergency funds and life insurance, among others.

The Commission, in the Single Market Act 13 (SMA) undertook to put in train several measures to ensure investment funds focused on funding social undertakings can flourish. The current proposal on a European framework for social investment funds is one initiative that delivers on that commitment. The principal aim is to increase the effectiveness of the fundraising by social investment funds, and to achieve a high level of clarity as to the characteristics that distinguish social investment funds from the wider category of alternative investment funds.

Several things prompted the idea for this book in Autumn 2006. First, it was 15 years since the EU had started harmonising copyright law. If we include the Community courts case law, harmonisation – albeit indirect – dates back to 1971 with Deutsche Grammophon1 the first decision in the field of copyright which, in a groundbreaking way not only decided that copyright was within the competence of the Community but also that in the context of the free movement of goods and services, an end should be put to protectionism by creating the concept of European exhaustion.

The project is jointly funded by the European Commission JOULE programme and national funding agencies including the UK Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions. The Commission will reinforce its cooperation with Member States on the implementation of the energy efficiency directive, the energy labelling and ecodesign legislation. Implementing the strategy for Key Enabling Technologies will also be a key lever of competitiveness. The Commission will deepen its work to help SMEs facing the challenge of financing and implement the Action Plan for entrepreneurship.

The Banco de España and the European Commission, in cooperation with the ECB, will closely monitor implementation of the recapitalisation plans, while the European Commission will monitor application of the restructuring decisions. In putting their recapitalisation into practice, banks requiring State aid will have to separate unimpaired assets from impaired assets before removing the latter from the balance sheet.

Public support will be granted, if appropriate, to Group 1 and 2 banks as soon as the Commission approves the related plans, following the procedure agreed in the Financial Assistance Facility Agreement. Thus, after funds have been requested for each bank, the European Financial Stability Facility (EFSF) – or, once it becomes operational, the European Stability Mechanism (ESM) – will verify compliance with all the requirements for disbursement and will forward its proposal in this respect to the Euro Working Group for approval.

This desk study was financed by the EUROPEAN COMMISSION, Joint Research Centre, Ispra. It gives an overview of the occurrence of these organic compounds in sewage sludge, basic toxicological data, a review on persistence of organic contaminants in soils and risk assessments for the various pathways. The attempt was made to identifiy additional substances or substance groups which might cause hazards and should be regulated. Thus it is recommendended that the benzo(a)pyrene concentration in soil is regulated.

Acknowledgements Governing Water (2004 – 2007) is a project funded by the European Commission. The aim is to raise awareness and promote dialogue on good governance, using water as a discussion issue, within and between communities in Fiji. More than 40 rural and urban communities on Viti Levu and Vanua Levu have participated in the Governing Water project. Through Governing Water, over 300 community facilitators and schoolteachers have been trained.
