Comparative assessment of antibacterial and antifungal activities of metallic ion based formulations
The present study aims to investigate the potential of the new formulations including silver (I) nanoparticles as well as copper (II) and zinc (II) chelates in their separated and complex forms in the treatment of infectious diseases. The capacity of metallic ion based systems to suppress the development of microorganism often seen on wounds, such as Gram-negative bacteria (Klebsiella pneumonia ATCC 700603, Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853), Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 29213), and fungi (Candida albicans ATCC 10231) were evaluated by microdilution assay.

Erodium genus contains several medicinal traditionally used and pharmacologically explored. However, Erodium guttatum has not been well valorized. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to evaluate the antibacterial and antioxidant activities of E. guttatum extracts in addition to their toxicity. To achieve the objectives of this study, methanol and aqueous extracts of E. guttatum were prepared.

The characterization of the biological properties of Chilean polyfloral honey was centered on their antioxidant and antibacterial activities. For this purpose, a significant number of samples were selected to evaluate their biological properties. Additionally, the identification of honey constituents was carried out using a complementary mass spectrometry technique (GC–MS), which allowed to find some 25 different compounds in the analyzed honey.

A new class of 2-[4-(1H-benzimidazol-1-yl)phenyl]-1H-benzimidazoles (13–22) were synthesized via cyclocondensation reaction of the substituted 1,2-phenylenediamines (1,4–12) and 1-(4-formylpheny)-1H-benzimidazole (3). The synthesized compounds were evaluated for antibacterial and antifungal activities against S. aureus, methicillinresistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), and Candida albicans by the tube dilution method. Compounds 13, 15, 18, 20, and 21 have moderate antifungal activity against C. albicans.

A new, less expensive, solvent-free procedure was developed for the synthesis of some new derivatives of various fused heterocyclic ring systems, namely azolopyridazine, azolotriazine, azinotriazine, thienopyridine, and pyrazolopyridine. The structures of the products prepared were established by their spectral data and elemental analyses. Eight compounds were evaluated for their in vitro antimicrobial activity. Some of the tested compounds exhibited moderate to significant antibacterial and antifungal activities.

All the synthesized compounds were characterized by spectral studies and screened for their in vitro antibacterial activity against S. aureus and B. thuringiensis (gram positive), and E. coli and K. pneumoniae (gram negative) bacterial strains. On comparing with the standard drug gentamicin, compounds derived from 4-methoxy and 3,4,5-trimethoxy benzaldehyde, i.e. 5g and 5h, showed broad spectrum antibacterial activity and the remaining compounds showed weak to moderate activity.

The biocomposite demonstrated upgraded swelling and antibacterial activity. The addition of ZnHAP accomplished the antibacterial activity. Biocompatibility studies were carried out using osteoblast cells and thus we proved the non-toxic nature of the biocomposite. Osteoblast cell adhesion investigations demonstrated that the cells were appended and infiltrated into the inside of the biocomposite.

The imperative demand for antibacterial agents and enzyme inhibitors prompted us to synthesize some new compounds, 6a–6k, bearing multifunctional moieties. The target acetamides were derived from 4-phenyl-5-(1- tosylpiperidin-4-yl)-4H-1,2,4-triazole-3-thiol (3). The structural analysis was carried out using modern spectroscopic techniques including IR, NMR, and EIMS spectral analysis. The antibacterial activity was screened against five bacterial strains including three gram-negative and two gram-positive ones.

A series of 5-substituted-1,3,4-thiadiazole-based fluoroquinolone derivatives were designed as potential antibacterial and anticancer agents using a molecular hybridization approach. The target compounds 16–25 were synthesized by reacting the corresponding N-(5-substituted-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-yl)-2-chloroacetamides with ciprofloxacin or norfloxacin. The purity and identity of the synthesized compounds were determined by the use of chromatographic and spectral techniques (NMR, IR, MS, etc.) besides elemental analysis.
