The thesis "Physical Activity, Acceptance and Mental Health in People with Alopecia Areata: The Use of a Mixed-methods Approach to Inform an Evidence-based Intervention" aimed to (1) investigate the relationship between PA, health-related QoL and mental health in people with AA; (2) identify factors that influence PA behaviours; and (3) implement an evidence-based intervention based on the outcomes of aims (1) and (2) designed to improve the mental health status in people with AA.

Using artificial Intelligence (AI) to read mammography images has been shown to predict breast cancer risk with higher accuracy than alternative approaches including polygenic risk scores (PRS), raising the question whether AI-based screening is more cost-effective than screening based on PRS or existing guidelines. This study provides the first evidence to shed light on this important question.

Despite international data indicating that Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) programs, which combine evidence-based perioperative strategies, expedite recovery after surgery, few centers have successfully adopted this approach within the U.S. We describe the implementation and efficacy of an ERAS program for colorectal abdominal surgery in a tertiary teaching center in the U.S.

The rapidly aging societies worldwide and in Singapore present a unique challenge, requiring an integrated multidisciplinary approach to address high-value targets such as muscle health. We propose pragmatic evidence-based multidisciplinary consensus recommendations for the assessment and multi-modal management of muscle health in older adults (≥65 years) across the continuum of care.

Insufficient performance of optimization-based approaches for the fitting of mathematical models is still a major bottleneck in systems biology. In this article, the reasons and methodological challenges are summarized as well as their impact in benchmark studies. Important aspects for achieving an increased level of evidence for benchmark results are discussed.

Google Glass is a prime example to learn how innovation is created and commercialized. More notably, learning from the making decision or acts of Google’s expert entrepreneurs is invaluable on the journey to become future entrepreneurs and innovators. Therefore, this article will discuss types of innovation matching Google Glass, entrepreneurial approaches to create Google Glass, and the definition of an entrepreneur. Note that every explanation will be based on the Google Glass case study and evidence from scientific research.

The literature has suggested that financial development and electricity consumption are key determinants of economic growth. However, existing studies usually was applied the frequentist inference, which is an outdated estimator. By applying the Bayesian approach via the Metropolis-Hasting and Gibbs samplers as the MCMC methods, the study aims to re-examine the impact of financial development and electricity consumption on economic growth in ASEAN+6 countries from 1980 to 2016.

Among the multiple conservative modalities, physiotherapy is a commonly utilized treatment modality in managing chronic non-specific spinal pain. Despite the scientific progresses with regard to pain and motor control neuroscience, treatment of chronic spinal pain (CSP) often tends to stick to a peripheral biomechanical model, without targeting brain mechanisms.

Self-management of arthritis requires informed, activated patients to manage its physical and psychosocial consequences. Patient activation and self-management can be enhanced through the use of cognitive-behavioural approaches, which have a strong evidence base and provide insight into the variation in outcome of patients with ostensibly the same degree of disease activity.

Fragility fractures are one of the leading causes for disability in old people. The main underlying mechanisms are osteoporosis and falls. Evidence-based measures to prevent either falls or fractures are available. However, coordinated preventive approaches combining bone health and fall prevention are rare.

Testing for marginal associations between numerous genetic variants and disease may miss complex relationships among variables (e.g., gene-gene interactions). Bayesian approaches can model multiple variables together and offer advantages over conventional model building strategies, including using existing biological evidence as modeling priors and acknowledging that many models may fit the data well.

In neuroscience research, mouse models are valuable tools to understand the genetic mechanisms that advance evidence-based discovery. In this context, large-scale studies emphasize the need for automated high-throughput systems providing a reproducible behavioral assessment of mutant mice with only a minimum level of manual intervention.

The number of primary care referrals of women with breast symptoms to symptomatic breast units (SBUs) has increased exponentially in the past decade in Ireland. The aim of this study is to develop and validate a clinical prediction rule (CPR) to identify women with breast cancer so that a more evidence based approach to referral from primary care to these SBUs can be developed.
