Polygonum cuspidatum Sieb. et Zucc. is a well-known medicinal plant whose pharmacological effects derive mainly from its stilbenes, anthraquinones, and flavonoids. These compounds accumulate differentially in the root, stem, and leaf; however, the molecular basis of such tissue-specific accumulation remains poorly understood.

Bud dormancy is a sophisticated strategy which plants evolve to survive in tough environments. Endodormancy is a key obstacle for anti-season culture of tree peony, and sufficient chilling exposure is an effective method to promote dormancy release in perennial plants including tree peony.

Flavonoid biosynthesis is strongly influenced by phytohormones. For example, methyl jasmonate (MeJA) enhances the flavonoid accumulation in pear. However, the molecular mechanism underlying the MeJAinduced flavonoid biosynthesis in pear is largely uncharacterized.

Proanthocyanidins (PAs) accumulate in the seeds, fruits and leaves of various plant species including the seed coats of pea (Pisum sativum), an important food crop. PAs have been implicated in human health, but molecular and biochemical characterization of pea PA biosynthesis has not been established to date, and detailed pea PA chemical composition has not been extensively studied.

Commercially available poinsettia (Euphorbia pulcherrima) varieties prevalently accumulate cyanidin derivatives and show intense red coloration. Orange-red bract color is less common. We investigated four cultivars displaying four different red hues with respect to selected enzymes and genes of the anthocyanin pathway, putatively determining the color hue.

Flavonoids have essential roles in flower pigmentation, fibre development and disease resistance in cotton. Previous studies show that accumulation of naringenin in developing cotton fibres significantly affects fibre growth. This study focused on determining the effects of the flavonoids naringenin, dihydrokaempferol, dihydroquerectin and eriodictyol on fibre development in an in vitro system.

Secondary metabolites play an important role in the plant defensive response. They are produced as a defence mechanism against biotic stress by providing plants with antimicrobial and antioxidant weapons. In higher plants, the majority of secondary metabolites accumulate as glycoconjugates.

The formation of natural colored fibers mainly results from the accumulation of different anthocyanidins and their derivatives in the fibers of Gossypium hirsutum L. Chalcone synthase (CHS) is the first committed enzyme of flavonoid biosynthesis, and anthocyanidins are transported into fiber cells after biosynthesis mainly by Anthocyanidin reductase (ANR) and Leucoanthocyanidin reductase (LAR) to present diverse colors with distinct stability.

The grape berry is considered a sink for primary key metabolites and relies on the use of available carbohydrates produced by photosynthesis to support its growth and development. The berry size and quality at the time of harvest mainly depends on water, sugars such as glucose, fructose and sucrose, organic acids (mainly malic and tartaric acids), amino acids (arginine, proline and glutamic acid), phenolic compounds (anthocyanins, flavonoids and tannins) and aroma precursor.

Quercetin, a pigment (flavonoid) found in many plants and foods, has good effects on protecting liver function but poor solubility and bioavailability in vivo. A drug delivery system can improve the accumulation and bioavailability of quercetin in liver. In this study, we used liposomal nanoparticles to entrap quercetin and evaluated its protective and therapeutic effects on drug-induced liver injury in rats.

In this study, the inducible function of sodium nitroprusside (SNP, a nitric oxide donor) was evaluated based on the changes in some biochemical characteristics of mungbean (Vigna radiata (L.) Wilczek cv. DX208) involving resistance to cowpea aphid (Aphis craccivora Koch). SNP treatment was sufficient to increase content of chlorophylls, reduced aphid-infested damage, accumulated biosynthesis of antioxidants such as phenolic compounds and flavonoids in mungbean plants attacked by A. craccivora.

The differential accumulation of endogenous flavonoids was recorded in soybean (G. max (L.) Merr. cv. “Nam Dan”) under infestation of cowpea aphid (Aphis craccivora Koch) and/or treatment of the crude extract of cyanobacterium strain Nostoc calcicola HN9-1a. During A. craccivora infestation, flavonoids in the aphid-infested leaves were strongly induced to high contents, which were 1.84–2.21 - fold higher than that observed in control.
