Gamma radiation monitoring

A compact gamma-ray sensor composed of a cadmium sulfide (CdS) photoresistor and a small-sized cesium iodine doped thallium (CsI(Tl)) scintillator is introduced for intense gamma-ray monitoring. The sensor exhibits radiationresistant ability and a linear output response over a wide dose range.

Environmental radiation monitoring stations using the NaI(Tl) scintillation detector have higher sensitivity and provide more accurate radiation dose values than using Geiger-Muller counters. However, when the temperature of the environment changes, the measuring data changes (due to the temperature dependence on the NaI(Tl) light yield and the quantum efficiency of the PMT).

The aim of the 2018 Intercomparison exercise implemented by the Primary Standard Dosimetry Laboratory (PSDL) of Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA) collaborated with IAEA is to assess the capabilities of the dosimetry services in participating member states in Asia and the Pacific region for the personal dose equivalent, Hp(10), in photon (gamma and X-ray) fields, thus supporting them to achieve a more accurate dosimetry service and to provide them with guidelines to improve the performance of the existing dosimetry services.

Radiation portal monitors (RPMs) are now stationed at strategic areas (airports, ports, etc.) to identify the illegal transportation of radioactive sources and nuclear items. RPMs are typically fitted with a PVT detector with a high recording efficiency. Radioisotope identification from the gamma spectrum acquired on this detector is normally not regarded due to the low resolution.

Current internal dosimetry monitoring programmes generally feature periodic measurements that are defined for the most commonly-encountered radionuclides. These programmes are not directly applicable to research centres that produce novel and short-lived radionuclides which are then used for the manufacture of radiopharmaceuticals, such as the CERN-MEDICIS facility hosted at CERN.

The aim of this study is to compare and evaluate the dose distribution and physical characteristics of two algorithms Anisotropic Analytical Algorithm (AAA) and Acuros XB (AXB) in Eclipse v13.6 software in regions heterogeneous densities. Computed Tomography Simulation (CT – Sim) data of 48 treated cancer patients (20 head and neck cancer (H&N) patients, 15 esophageal cancer patients, 8 lung cancer patients with 3 Dimensions Conformal Radiation Therapy (3D-CRT) and 5 lung cancer patients treated with Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT)) were used to replan the Eclipse v13.

In this study a new AGRS system empowered by ANN-BFGS has been proposed and evaluated on available empirical AGRS data. To that effect different architectures of adaptive ANN-BFGS were implemented for a sort of published experimental AGRS outputs. The selected approach among of various training methods, with its low iteration cost and nondiagonal scaling allocation is a new powerful algorithm for AGRS data due to its inherent stochastic properties.
