The acute toxicity, cytotoxicity, genotoxicity and antigenotoxic effects of BC were studied. Cytotoxicity of BC was evaluated in cultured C3A hepatoma cells (HepG2/C3A) using a lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity assay. Acute toxicity was tested in adults Wistar rats treated with a single dose of BC.

The potential genotoxicity of cola- containing soft drink was investigated by Vicia faba assay. Root tips were treated with different concentrations of the cola- containing soft drink (100% and 50%) at 24 hours exposure. The concentration exposure affected the mitotic division in root tip cells and produced various chromosomal aberrations. The abnormalities scored were, bridges, fragments, lobulated nuclei, sticky metaphase and sticky anaphase. Exposure to soft drinks inhibited the cell cycle in a concentration dependent manner.

Aluminum is used in a wide range of applications and is a potential environmental hazard. The known genotoxic effects of aluminum might play a role in the development of breast cancer. However, the data currently available on the subject are not sufficient to establish a causal relationship between aluminum exposure and the augmented risk of developing breast cancer.

The present study was carried out on sixty Wistar rats divided into groups I, II, III, IV and V for a period of 28 days to study genotoxic effects induced by arsenic, lead and their mixture. The group I served as control while group II, III and IV were gavaged with sodium arsenite, lead acetate and mixture of both metals, respectively. The group V served as positive control which was treated with cyclophosphamide. Chromosomal aberration assay and micronuclei assay was studied from bone marrow cells of femur bone of all the rats.

The genotoxic effects of 2 heavy metals (mercury chloride and cadmium chloride) on the gametic cells of 6 inbred lines of maize were tested in terms of cytological abnormalities. Meiosis was normal under control conditions. During the treatments with mercury and cadmium there was a concentration-dependent increase in meiotic abnormalities in all the inbred lines.

The present study evaluated the genotoxic effect of aqueous extract of C. sarcomedium Meve & Liede and its protective role in chromosomal aberrations induced by 2% hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) on Allium cepa root meristem. Our results showed that the C. sarcomedium extract induced major chromosomal aberrations, viz., nuclear lesions, chromosome breaks, chromosome laggards, vagrance, stickiness, and bridges.

Lichens are recently receiving great attention because they have potential anticancer activity. Therefore, in this study, genotoxic and antigrowth properties of lichen species Usnea filipendula Stirt. were tested against human breast cancer cell lines (MCF-7 and MDAMB-231). Antigrowth effect was assayed by the MTT and ATP viability assays.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the genotoxic effect of a bovine bone-derived hydroxyapatite (HA), Boneplus-xs (B-P-XS). The genotoxicity of B-P-XS was investigated by examining the potential of the xenograft (B-P-XS) to induce gene mutation (evaluated using the Ames test), in vitro chromosome aberration (CA), and sister chromatid exchange (SCE) with tests in cultured human peripheral lymphocytes.

Brassica juncea (L.) Czern. is an important species of the family Brassicaceae with immense medicinal value. The main goal of this study was to investigate the antigenotoxic effects of different concentrations (0.1%-1.0%) of chloroform extract of B. juncea seeds on mercury-induced (0.75 ppm) genotoxic effects in root cells of Allium cepa.
