Rice is one of the most important food crops in the world and mainly cultivated in paddy feld by transplanting seedlings. However, increasing water scarcity due to climate change, labor cost for transplanting, and competition from urbanization is making this traditional method of rice production unsustainable in the long term.

Dent and Flint represent two major germplasm pools exploited in maize breeding. Several traits differentiate the two pools, like cold tolerance, early vigor, and flowering time. A comparative investigation of their genomic architecture relevant for quantitative trait expression has not been reported so far.

Two hundred and fifty chickpea germplasm were evaluated against beet army worm Spodoptera exigua during the year 2013-14 and 2014-15. Eighteen promising chickpea genotypes with low levels of susceptibility were selected Among the 250 germplasms tested, and screened for three consecutive years viz., 2016-17, 2017-18 and 2018-19 for confirmation of tolerance against the insect pest under natural field conditions at Regional Agricultural Research Station, Nandyal, Andhra Pradesh.

The present investigation was aimed to identify the resistant germplasms against Colletotrichum capsici in vitro by artificial inoculation. Ten isolates of Colletotrichum capsici collected from different regions of Vidarbha and Marathwada (Maharashtra), Bidar district (Karnataka) and Guntur district (Andra Pradesh) showing varied type of pathogenic ability against chilli variety Jayanti and designated as strongly, moderately and weakly pathogenic on the basis of per cent leaf area covered by the disease.

Screening of red-kernelled deep water rice germplasm of Assam, India for disease and pest resistance
The germplasm, five germplasm viz. Arg Bao, Basudev Bao, Dal Bao, Rayada B8 and Sarmora Bao showed MR reaction to both diseases and pest tested. These germplasm may be used as donors in resistant DWR breeding programmes against the tested pathogens and pest.

The present investigation aims ultimately to find out to management strategy for leaf spot of ber disease that suits agroclimatic conditions of the country. In the absence of stable management strategy, use of resistant varieties, against Alternaria leaf spot of ber is the only recommendation for the management of leaf spot of ber.

The primary step to biofortify rice can be successfully achieved after screening the folate distribution in rice germplasm accessions. The extent of natural variation in folate content needs to be determined to employ selection of genotypes or breeding for enhancement of folate levels. As such, there is very limited study in India on the genetic variation in rice germplasm for folate content. Selection of rice genotypes with higher folate content is the first step towards enhancement of folate levels in rice based foods.

The field experiment on screening of tomato lines for GBNV infection was carried out Horticultural College and Research Institute, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University and Coimbatore. Totally 25 hybrids/varieties were screened in Rabi season during 2015. None of the varieties/hybrids screened were resistant or immune to GBNV during Rabi season. However, average disease incidence ranged from 7.55 to 25.25 percent indicating moderately resistant to highly susceptible.

Thirty varieties of turmeric Curcuma longa L. were screened in the field against Pythium aphanidermatum for one year during 2016-2017 at College of Horticulture, Anantharajupeta, Y.S.R. Kadapa, Andhra Pradesh. These varieties were also screened in lab and net house (pot) condition. Out of 30 varieties two varieties (Salem and Prathibha) showed resistance to rhizome rot and five (TCP-129, VK-9, IC-330113, IC-033007 and IC-212606) were moderately resistant, providing good material for developing rhizome rot resistant turmeric varieties.

Powdery mildew caused by Golovinomyces cichoracearum (DC.) V.P. Heluta (formerly Erysiphe cichoracearum) is a common foliar disease on senescing leaves of cultivated sunflower in warmer regions of the world. In India, the powdery mildew disease is becoming major constraint in cultivation of sunflower crop especially during post rainy season. Screening of the sunflower germplasm lines against the disease would be of a great help to identify the resistance source.
