  • Grasslands in the Arctic tundra undergo irreversible degradation due to climatic changes and also over-exploitation and depletion of scarce resources. Comprehensive investigations of cytogenomic structures of valuable Arctic and sub-Arctic grassland species is essential for clarifying their genetic peculiarities and phylogenetic relationships, and also successful developing new forage grass cultivars with high levels of adaptation, stable productivity and longevity.

  • The degree of dense planting affects the respiration characteristics of alfalfa artificial grassland. In the process of alfalfa seed production, high plant and multibranch forage can be obtained by reasonable close planting. Therefore, an analysis method of the effect of reasonable close planting on respiration characteristics of garden alfalfa artificial grassland is put forward. In this method, the density characteristics of alfalfa planting were determined from three aspects of plant horizontal density, vertical density and three-dimensional density.

  • Aboveground biomass (AGB) is one of the key indicators of aboveground net primary productivity (ANPP). The aim of this study is to demonstrate the potential of hyperspectral remote sensing techniques to predict AGB in grasslands. In order to reach this goal, biomass properties with different ecological features and altitudes of 550 m, 1200 m, and 1400 m above sea level were investigated. Twenty-one biomass samples and hyperspectral measurements were collected from each region and a total of 63 samples were analyzed.

  • A field experiment was conducted during Kharif 2013 and Kharif 2014 on sandy loam soil to study the effect of vegetative barriers and improved forage species on growth and productivity of degraded grasslands under mid hill sub temperate conditions of Himachal Pradesh. Napier bajra hybrid (Pennisetum purpureum L. x P. Americanum L.) as vegetative barrier produced significantly taller plants as compared to setaria grass planted as vegetative barrier.

  • The Eurasian steppe is an important vegetation type characterized by cold, arid and nitrogen poor conditions. At the Eastern edge, including in the Songnen grassland, the vegetation is dominated by Leymus chinensis (henceforth L. chinensis) and is increasing threatened by elevated anthropogenic nitrogen deposition.

  • Livestock farming forms an integral part in the economy of the NEH Region of India and plays an important role in the mixed crop farming system. In addition, high diversity in livestock composition is the characteristic features of the mainland of this region. The region obtains high potential of milk production because of availability of fodder as a form of extensive grasslands, wasteland, shrub and fodder trees. Livestock, other than milk production, are widely used for manure, plowing fields and transportation of goods.

  • The C4 photosynthetic carbon cycle can be explained as the elaborated addition to the C3 photosynthetic pathway. It is a unique series of biochemical, anatomical and regulatory gene characteristics that concentrate CO2around the carboxylating enzyme Rubisco, thereby increasing photosynthetic efficiency during high rates of photorespiration. The C4 photosynthetic pathway has evolved as an adaptation to high light intensities, high temperatures and dryness, therefore in the warmer climates of the tropical and subtropical dominating the grassland floras and biomass production.

  • Organic farming is a modern way of agriculture management, not using any chemical treatments which have negative effects on the environment, human health or animal health. It produces organic foodstuffs, and at the same time enhances the living conditions of animals. It contributes to environmental protection and helps biodiversity to increase. Organic farming does not mean going ‘back’ to traditional (old) methods of farming. Many of the farming methods used in the past are still useful today. Organic farming takes the best of these and combines them with modern scientific knowledge.

  • Large herbivores are, and have for a long time been, among the major drivers for forming the shape and function of terrestrial ecosystems. These animals may modify primary production, nutrient cycles, soil properties, fire regimes as well as other biota. Some large herbivore species/populations are at the edge of extinction and great effort is being made to save them. Other species/populations are under discussion for reintroduction. Still other species occur in dense populations and cause conflicts with other land use interests.

  • Today, the world faces many problems. The most important problem is the population explosion. The population of 2.8 billion around 1945 doubled during the following 50 years, and it will approximately double again, reaching 10 billion during the next 50 years. This population increase will produce serious effects on worldwide food consumption and distribution; however, a sharp production increase in agricultural products cannot be expected.
