Hemoglobin vesicles (HbV) are hemoglobin-based oxygen carriers manufactured by liposome encapsulation of hemoglobin molecules. We hypothesised that the infusion of oxygenated HbV could prolong the time to circulatory collapse during apnea in rats.

Immediate preconcentration and spectrophotometric methods have been developed for the determination of trace amounts of cupric ion (Cu(II)) and nickel ion (Ni(II)) through a solid phase extraction with XAD-4-N,N’-bis- (salicylidene) cyclohexanediamine (XAD-4-SCHD) resin and a complex color reaction of the ions with 2,6-dimethylmorpholine dithiocarbamate (DMMDTC) in Triton X-100 media. A high preconcentration factor of 125 was achieved.

P-glycoprotein (Pgp), a member of the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) super-family responsible for the ATP-driven extrusion of diverse hydrophobic molecules from cells, is a cause of multidrug resistance in human tumours. Pgp can also operate as a phospholipid and glycosphingolipid flippase, and has been functionally linked to cholesterol, suggesting that it might be associated with sphingolipid–cholesterol microdomains in cell membranes.

Human serum albumin (HSA) is best known for its extraordinary ligand binding capacity. HSA has a high affinity for heme and is responsible for the transport of medium and long chain fatty acids. Here, we report myri-state binding to the N and B conformational states of Mn(III)heme–HSA (i.e. at pH 7.0 and 10.0, respectively) as investigated by optical absorbance and NMR spectroscopy. Stromal cell-derived factor-1 (SDF-1)⁄CXCL12, the ligand for CXCR4, induces signal transduction. We previously showed that CXCL12 binds to high- and low-affinity sites expressed by primary cells and cell lines, and forms complexes with CXCR4 as expected and also with a proteoglycan, syndecan-4, but does not form complexes with syndecan-1, syndecan-2, CD44 or beta-glycan. We also demonstrated the occurrence of a CXCL12-independent heteromeric complex between CXCR4 and syndecan-4.

This paper reports the results obtained using the osmotic stress method applied to the purified cathodic and anodic hemoglobins (Hbs) from the catfishHoplosternum littorale, a species that displays facultative accessorial air oxygen-ation. We demonstrate that water potential affects the oxy-gen affinity ofH. littoraleHbs in the presence of an inert solute (sucrose). Glycoprotein (GP) V is noncovalently linked to GPIba, GPIbband GPIX within the platelet GPIb–V–IX complex, a receptor for von Willebrand factor and thrombin. Hemoglobin-oxygen dissociation curve. The hemoglobin tetramer can bind up to four molecules of oxygen in the iron-containing sites of the heme molecules. As oxygen is bound, 2,3-BPG and CO2 are expelled. Salt bridges are broken, and each of the globin molecules changes its conformation to facilitate oxygen binding. Oxygen release to the tissues is the reverse process, salt bridges being formed and 2,3-BPG and CO2 bound. Deoxyhemoglobin does not bind oxygen efficiently until the cell returns to conditions of higher pH, the most important modulator of O2 affinity (Bohr effect).
