  • In this study, the factors related to the veneer material and adhesive properties were fixed; however, working conditions and process parameters (impregnation, pre-drying, curing, gluing, hot press) could affect the performance of plywood. Therefore, the objective of this work is to investigate the influence of two different processes (with and without curing before gluing) on bonding quality of the treated beech plywood.

  • This study aimed to elucidate how the glass transition temperature and water interactions in cellulose esters are affected by the structures of their side chains. Cellulose acetate, cellulose acetate propionate and cellulose acetate butyrate with three fractions of butyrates, all having the same total degree of substitution, were selected, and hot-melt pressed.

  • In this work, two series of composite materials based on unsaturated polyester (UPE) resin and coffee husk powder were fabricated by a hot pressing method using methyl ethyl ketone peroxide (MEKP) as an initiator. The gel time of UPE resin is 32  2 min with 0.5 wt % of MEKP was determined according to ASTM D2471. The differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) reveals that the curing process should be post-cured.

  • Samples were molded under a hot press and for each sample 50 test samples obtained by cutting them with a water jet. The obtained samples were characterized by TG, FTIR, and SEM. The effect of water absorption was evaluated by measuring percentage water absorption and flexural strength of samples over 9 months. The results revealed that filler addition lowers the damage created by distilled water a considerable amount and addition of hydrophobic fillers to epoxy matrix composites can be especially beneficial for applications where long-term water exposure is desired.

  • In this work, a model is delivered, which highlights a simple mathematic relationship between the refractive index of an optical material and its transmittance spectrum measured by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy. Such model allows determining the refractive index of ceramics fabricated by hot-pressing of MgF2 nanoparticles. The reliability of this method has been verified on a silicon wafer taken as a reference (< 0.5%, discrepancy with data from literature on Si). Our approach can be applied to a variety of promising novel optical materials being developed.

  • A new electromechanical press for fuel pellet manufacturing was built last year in partnership between CEA-Marcoule and ChampalleAlcen. This press was developed to shape pellets in a hot cell via remote handling. It has been qualified to show its robustness and to optimize the compaction cycle, thus obtaining a better sintered pellet profile and limiting damage.

  • In this study wheat straw was taken from Ankara province. In order to produce dry process MDF, urea formaldehyde resin was used at the ratio of 8 %, 10 % and 12 %, 1 % ammonium chloride was used as hardening agent on the basis of dry fiber weight. On the other hand, 5, 6 and 7 min. pressing times were applied. Alcohol benzene, cold water, hot water and 1 % NaOH solubility of wheat straw were 5.15 %, 7.31 %, 9.84 % and 40.79 % respectively. In addition, holocellulose, cellulose, lignin and ash contents were found as 74.79 %, 52.67 %, 20.17% and 4.21 % respectively.

  • A series of commercially manufactured medium density fiberboard (MDF) panels were exposed to a post-manufacture heat-treatment at various temperatures and durations using a hot press and just enough pressure to ensure firm contact between the panel and the press platens. Postmanufacture heat-treatment improved surface roughness of the exterior MDF panels. Panels treated at 225C for 30 min had the smoothest surface while the roughest surface was found for the control panels.

  • A mathemalical model is presented that describes heat and moisture transfer during the holpressing of MDF. The model includes conduction of heat between the press platens and the central layer of the mattress, phase change of water from the adsorbed to the vapor state and the convective heat and mass transfer through the edges of the mattress. This approach results in a three-dimensional unsleady-state problem in which the properties of the wood fibers, water and the wood-water system are dependent on temperature, mattress moisture content and steam pressure.

  • Effect of wollastonite nanofibers on the improvement of thermal conductivity coefficient of Medium-Density Fiberboard (MDF) was studied here to find a possible solution to decrease hot-press time as a bottle-neck during composite production. Nanowollastonite was applied at 10%, based on the dry weight of wood fibers. Density of the control MDF boards was 0.66 g/cm3. Thermal conductivity coefficient was measured using an apparatus based on Fourier’s Law for heat conduction.

  • ON that summer day the sky over New York was unflecked by clouds, and the air hung motionless, the waves of heat undisturbed. The city was a vast oven where even the sounds of the coiling traffic in its streets seemed heavy and weary under the press of heat that poured down from above. In Washington Square, the urchins of the neighborhood splashed in the fountain, and the usual midday assortment of mothers, tramps and out-of-works lounged listlessly on the hot park benches. As a bowl, the Square was filled by the torrid sun, and the trees and grass drooped...

  • News outlets today are abuzz with stories about blogs. In January 2005, Fortune magazine featured a story called “Why There’s No Escaping the Blog.” In May of the same year, “Blogs Will Change Your Business” screamed from the cover of Business- Week. Blogs have become so hot that some mainstream TV news reporters are quoting from the more popular blogs on the air. Un- fortunately, despite all the press coverage, little is being published about how blogs can benefit you and your business....
