  • A policy of high rice prices can increase paddy farm incomes but also cause a rise in rice expenditures for farm households. Such a policy is needed to stimulate production but can harm rice consumers, especially poor families. We surveyed 284 paddy farmers in Gantar Sub-District, Indramayu Regency, Indonesia to analyze the impact of increasing rice prices on farmers’ net incomes, including poor paddy farmers. We found that a price increase benefits farmer if the price transmission elasticity is more than 0.2 for non-poor paddy farmers or 0.6 for poor paddy farmers.

  • The study examines the factors affecting health demand in Vietnam, specifically the northern part of Vietnam, based on the 2016 VHLSS dataset. The first results show that individual and household characteristics are impact on the individual's demand for medical services. To do so, we use micro-data from an expenditure-survey. First, we measure the energy affordability problem by calculating the Boardman indicator.   • Using the data from an original survey, we analyse energy use patterns and, in particular, energy use for cooking in households from Hawassa City, Southern Ethiopia. Cooking is the main energy-related activity on which households spend money. This expenditure represents 89% of total energy expenditure and a fifth of a household’s total budget. Expenditure on modern energy and electricity represents only about a fifth of an energy budget, whilst fuelwood, a potentially health damaging energy, still prevails as the main energy used for cooking in Hawassa.

  • The main focus of the study was to assess the impact of food subsidy on consumption of rural and urban households in Western Tamil Nadu. Almost Ideal Demand System and Household Food Consumption Function were used to study the consumption pattern of different income groups and analyse the effect of food subsidy on consumption pattern. The results of expenditure pattern had revealed that as income increased the percentage of expenditure of food commodities decreased.

  • The present study has been based on the data from five major quin-quennial rounds of the National Sample Survey on the Household Consumption Expenditure in India during 1993-94, to 2011-12, and proposed to bring out the temporal, spatial and cross sectional differences in the food consumption pattern of Indian households. The study revealed a considerable decline in the monthly per capita cereal consumption from 13.40 kg in 1993-94 to 11.23 kg in rural India in 2011-12, the corresponding figures for urban India being 10.63 kg and 9.32 kg.

  • Backyard poultry farming has been recognized as an effective tool for poverty alleviation in the rural families of Punjab. The level of monthly income from backyard poultry is sufficient for livelihood (20-25 birds) and an important source of supplementing earnings. It provides eggs and meat for family consumption and to some extent cash income to the family.   • It was found that growth performance of agro-processing industries in Karnataka was unsatisfactory when compared with its other states. It is found that 48 per cent of the household expenditure in India is on food items and the demand for processed/convenience food is constantly increasing. With relatively cheaper labour, low cost of production, base for domestic and export markets could be set up.
