  • This paper presents a method for extracting distinctive invariant features from images that can be used to perform reliable matching between different views of an object or scene. The features are invariant to image scale and rotation, and are shown to provide robust matching across a a substantial range of affine distortion, change in 3D viewpoint, addition of noise, and change in illumination. The features are highly distinctive, in the sense that a single feature can be correctly matched with high probability against a large database of features from many images.

  • The KMP algorithm [Knuth et al. 1997] creates a prefix function from the pattern to define transition functions that expedite the search. The prefix func- tion is built in O(m) time, and the algorithm has a worst case time complex- ity of O(nCm), independent from the alphabet size. Exhaustive experiments [Wright et al. 1998] show that, in general, KMP has the best performance. Be- cause of its good performance, and its independence from the alphabet size, KMP provides a natural basis for dealing with the more general problem of optimizing database queries on sequences.

  • The availability of databases of images labeled with keywords is necessary for developing and evaluating image annotation models. Dataset collection is however a costly and time consuming task. In this paper we exploit the vast resource of images available on the web. We create a database of pictures that are naturally embedded into news articles and propose to use their captions as a proxy for annotation keywords. Experimental results show that an image annotation model can be developed on this dataset alone without the overhead of manual annotation. ...

  • The evolution of technological advances in infrared sensor technology, image processing, “smart” algorithms, knowledge-based databases, and their overall system integration has resulted in new methods of research and use in medical infrared imaging. The development of infrared cameras with focal plane arrays not requiring cooling added a new dimension to this modality. New detector materials with improved thermal sensitivity are now available and production of high-density focal plane arrays (640×480) has been achieved.

  • The Roman philosopher Cicero said that “everything is in the face”, and truly the human face is a complex, multifunctional part of our anatomy which tells the world, who we are and what we are feeling both emotionally and physically, as well as performing a number of essential physiological functions. We all have to live with our own face and with how others perceive us through its appearance. It can effect our self esteem and if we are unhappy with it we may try to alter it.
