Several studies have been focused on rhizobium mediated stress tolerance in legumes as the ability of symbiotic fixation offer an opportunity to improve nitrogen status of the soil and crop productivity under stress conditions. But to upgrade the existing rhizobial strains with more promising new rhizobial isolates is the demand of hour. So this work aimed to evaluate the responses of different promising rhizobial isolates for physiological traits and to correlate these traits with seed yield under drought condition.

The aim of this study was to analyse the expression profile of CHS in wheat genotype under imposed drought stress. For this purpose 20 wheat genotypes were treated with different concentration of PEG to imposed rought condition. The result shows very high expression value of CHS gene for genotype HD2733 and K9107 as compared to genotype DBW71 and PBW553 at every level of polyethylene glycol concentration under imposed drought stress condition.

Studies on soybean GmNAC085 transcription factor revealed that the gene expression in plants was induced by water shortage treatments and its overexpression in the model plant Arabidopsis displayed improved plant tolerance characteristics towards drought stress. In this study, we continued analyzing the biological functions of GmNAC085 using transgenic soybean system overexpressing GmNAC085 gene, by targeting at a number of plant physiological features and biochemical activities in response to limited water growing condition.

Both biotic and abiotic stresses are major constrains to agricultural production. Under stress conditions, plant growth is affected by a number of factors such as hormonal and nutritional imbalance, ion toxicity, physiological disorders, susceptibility to diseases, etc. Plant growth under stress conditions may be enhanced by the application of microbial inoculation including plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR).

Water deficit is one of the principal abiotic stresses which adversely affect the crop growth and yield. Drought induces the metabolic functions such as reduced synthesis of photosynthetic pigments, the decline in the chlorophyll stability and alternations in physiological parameters.

Premature leaf senescence induced by external stress conditions, e.g. drought stress, is a main factor for yield losses in barley. Research in drought stress tolerance has become more important as due to climate change the number of drought periods will increase and tolerance to drought stress has become a goal of high interest in barley breeding.

Among abiotic stresses drought is one of the most important limiting factor that adversely affect the plant production in the majority of agricultural crops of the world. Presently exogenous application of cytokinins i.e., Kinetin (@ 10, 20 and 40 mg/L) and Benzyl adenine(@ 25 and 50 mg/L) was studied on plant Relative leaf water content (RLWC), Water saturation deficit (WSD), relative saturation deficit (RSD) and carbohydrate metabolism (total soluble sugars and starch) content of wheat cultivars under water deficit conditions.

Sesame is one of the oldest oil crop, cultivated in tropical and sub tropical areas. Tolerance to moisture stress is one of the important criteria in the cultivation of sesame in many countries of the world. Hence, experiments were conducted to screen ten ruling varieties of sesame viz., CO1, SVR1, SVPR1, VRI 1, VRI 2, TMV 3, TMV 4, TMV 5, TMV 6 and TMV 7 under induced drought condition using Poly Ethylene Glycol (PEG 6000) @ 3, 6, 9, 12, and 15 percentage concentrations.

A developed human society in today’s era needs advancement in food production and yield to feed the ever blooming monstrous population. The existing feed supply resources are however confronted with a variety of environmental complexities like the global warming, curtailment of the agricultural lands and deterioration of the resources supporting the crop production. Abiotic stress like heat, cold, drought, flood, heavy metal etc create unfavourable condition for crop plant which effect its growth, survival and reproduction.

Abiotic stresses are major constrains which adversely affect the plant growth and productivity. Among all abiotic stresses, drought is considered as one of the major constraints on agricultural productivity worldwide and is likely to further increase. Hence the need of the hour is to formulate the strategies that can minimize the loss in crop production under drought conditions. One of them being the exploitation of soil microbes which have the capacity to overcome the adverse effects of drought stress.

Wheat is an important cereal crop grown worldwide primarily for chapati, bread and biscuits. Target specific wheat breeding and quality improvement programs focus on developing genetically superior, high yielding, disease resistant cultivars with desired quality that are adapted to different growth environments. Drought refers to the condition of reduced soil moisture which induces several changes in crops i.e., morphological, biological, physiological and molecular changes. It also causes reduction in crop yield or in some cases cause crop failure.

Endophytes are microorganisms mostly bacteria and fungi that lives partially or completely its life cycle inside living plant tissue without causing adverse negative symptoms. Endophytes play a major role in structuring shaping processes of plant such as colonization, competition, coexistence and soil nutrient dynamics. Some endophytes promote growth of their host plants by enhancing the host‟s ability to take up nitrogen and phosphorus.

Drought is increasingly becoming a serious challenge reducing common bean productivity. A study was conducted with the objective of evaluating common bean cultivars against different concentration levels of Polyethylene glycol which induces drought stress in radical length and root biomass to identify cultivars of common beans tolerant to drought stress and rank top performing accordingly. Complete Randomized Design with four replications and 50 treatments were employed in the laboratory experiment.

Intending to scrutinize the influence of silicon (Si) on the yield attributes of rice under well-watered and water-deficit conditions, a field trial for two successive years (2017 and 2018) was laid out in split- plot design with four treatments viz. Control (T1), Si fertilization (T2), Si fertilization + Drought stress (T3) and Drought stress (T4). The results distinctly validated positive significant correlation between silicon and the yield attributes such as panicle weight (flowering and maturity) and harvest index in rice under well-watered conditions.

Different degree of drought stress affects morpho-reproductive growth in wheat (Triticum aestivum L)
Experiment was carried out to study the impact of induced water stress at different crop developmental stages for morpho-reproductive growth characters in two wheat cultivars at experimental area of Division of Bio chemistry and Physiology SKUAST J, in 2013. The experiment was laid out with two wheat varieties i.e., PBW-343 and RSP-81 with 04 water stress levels. T1 (without withholding of water), T2 (10 days with-holding of water [WOW]), T3 (15 days WOW) and T4 (20 days WOW) were applied.

The occurrence of drought stress at seed filling stage is known to cause severe yield reduction in soybean especially where the crop is grown in rainfed conditions. Screening of large germplasm lines under natural drought conditions is extremely difficult to execute due to unusual rains. In the present study, about 328 germplasm lines are screened for terminal drought tolerance by spraying 0.2% of potassium iodide (KI) at R5 stage and the tolerant lines were again retested under similar conditions in the subsequent year.

Cytokinin (CK) is an important phytohormone, which not only plays significant role in plant development but also involves in mediating plant stress tolerance. Previous studies showed that the drought tolerance can be improved by stress-inducible overexpression of adenine isopentenyl transferase (IPT), which is a critical enzyme in CKs biosynthesis.
