The empirical results from Probit models and Feasible Generalised Least Squares method show that ownership by institutional and foreign investors have positive impact on listed firms’ audit quality while family and government ownership do not affect audit quality.

  • This paper examines the effect of institutional investors on stock price informativeness. Using a comprehensive data set of firms listed on the Hochiminh Stock Exchange and the Hanoi Stock Exchange over the 2007 - 2017 period, we find that institutional ownership is negatively associated with stock price synchronicity, which is an inverse measure of stock price informativeness.

  • By using the panel data of China’s high-tech listed companies in 2013-2018, this paper shows common funds as active institutional investors significantly promotes firms’ R&D investment. For every 10 percentage point increase of common fund ownership rate, high-tech firms’ R & D expense ratio and R & D staff ratio would increase respectively by 0.1 and 2.3 percentage points. The impact is greater in more technology-intensive companies. But institutional investors have no influence on firms’ innovation productivity measured by the number of patents gained per million R & D expenses.

  • In China, domestic firms can issue A- and B-shares. Before Feb 2001, Domestic investors can only invest A-shares while foreign investors can only trade B-shares. This paper makes use of this special feature in testing information and trading noise hypotheses. We find that A-share prices are more volatile than B-share prices even though they are issued by the same companies and are traded in the same stock market.

  • The results show that institutional ownership has negative and significant effect on audit quality while block-holder ownership has positive and significant effect on audit quality. This implies that institutional ownership reduces audit quality while block-holder ownership influences audit quality positively. The study conclude that both institutional and block-holder ownership affect audit quality and recommends that the proportion of shares acquired by institutions should be reviewed downward and that of block-holder ownership should be increased.
