  • Ebook "Surface patterning with colloidal monolayers" introduces approaches for both challenges: It establishes a simple yet effective way to crystallize colloidal monolayers over large areas by employing the air/water interface in a process that can be repeated without any special equipment in laboratories around the world and introduces methodologies to prepare complex, functional structures from very simple starting materials.

  • This specification covers two kinds of rolls used in machinery for producing corrugated paperboard. Rolls are fabricated of forged bodies and trunnions. The trunnions may be bolted or shrink assembled on one or both ends of the body. A seal weld may be made at the body/trunnion interface. Roll shells are made of carbon/manganese, or low alloy steel as hereinafter described, and are heat treated prior to assembly. Pressure rolls may be ordered surface hardened as Condition H, or without surface hardening as Condition S.

  • The interaction of a laser-excited circular acoustic wave in water on an epoxy-resin surface was studied directly and visually by photoelasticity imaging technique. The result shows the direct image of the pressure wave, shear wave, and Scholte waves, which are the three typical acoustic waves excited when an acoustic wave crosses a solid-liquid interface. This technique provides a clear, whole field image of the phenomena; and is a promising method to study the acoustic phenomena at the interfaces.

  • Suture anchor-based fixations of humeral greater tuberosity (GT) fractures have yielded good outcomes in both clinical and biomechanical studies. Be that as it may, the interface contact properties of these fixations have yet to be elaborated. In response, the contact characteristics of two double-row suture anchor fixations for the management of GT fracture were compared.

  • The present study aimed to develop the predictive models of average tool-workpiece interface temperature in hard turning of AISI 1060 steels by coated carbide insert. The Response Surface Methodology (RSM) and Artificial Neural Network (ANN) were employed to predict the temperature in respect of cutting speed, feed rate and material hardness. The number and orientation of the experimental trials, conducted in both dry and high pressure coolant (HPC) nvironments, were planned using full factorial design. The temperature was measured by using the tool-work thermocouple.

  • Reverse circulation down-the-hole (RC-DTH) air hammers have been widely used in construction and mining activities owing to their high drilling efficiency and good dust control performance. This paper presents a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) approach with the dynamic mesh method for evaluating the performance of RC-DTH air hammers. Nine stages of operating conditions of the RC-DTH air hammer are described herein to better understand the operating mechanism of the RC-DTH air hammer.

  • The increased demand for higher resolution and detailed SAR imaging builds up a pressure on the processing power of the existing systems for real time or near real time processing. Exploitation of GPU processing power could suffice the increasing demands in processing. The processing of initial SAR systems was based on the principles of Fourier Optics.

  • Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) can be defined as a self-configured and infrastructure-less wireless networks to monitor physical or environmental conditions, such as temperature, sound, vibration, pressure, motion or pollutants and to cooperatively pass their data through the network to a main location or sink where the data can be observed and analysed. A sink or base station acts likean interface between users and the network. One can retrieve required information from the network by injecting queries and gathering results from the sink.

  • A natural approach to implementing such systems is to use an existing query-based data collection system for sen- sor networks. Through queries, a user can ask for the data he or she is interested in without concern for the technical details of how that data will be retrieved or processed. A number of research projects, including Cougar [31], Di- rected Diffusion [12], and TinyDB [19,20] have advocated a query-based interface to sensornets, and several imple- mentations of query systems have been built and deployed.

  • The information required for successful assembly of an icosahedral virus is encoded in the native conformation of the capsidproteinand in its interactionwith the nucleic acid. Here we investigated how the packing and stability of virus capsids are sensitive to single amino acid substitutions in the coat protein. Tryptophan fluorescence, bis-8-anilinonaph-thalene-1-sulfonate fluorescence, CD and light scattering were employed to measure urea- and pressure-induced effects on MS2 bacteriophage and temperature sensitive mutants. ...

  • The olive is one of the most ancient cultivated fruit trees. Olive cultivation has a very long history which started from the Third Millennium BC (Loukas & Krimbas, 1983) in the Eastern region of the Mediterranean sea and spread later around the basin following land and maritime routes to Italy, Spain, North Africa and France. Nowadays there are about 805 million of olive trees, 98% of which are grown in the Mediterranean countries (Tsitsipis et al., 2009). The foremost consuming countries are also the main olive oil producers.

  • Fig. 35.27 The external load applied to the joint interface has exceeded the critical load by an amount = A. This suggests that a joint designed to the above equation might have larger and/or more numerous bolts than necessary to support pressure loads the bolts will never see. The ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code takes an even more conservative point of view than that described by the above equation to introduce a factor of safety. This code assumes that the bolts see 100% of external load Lx, not an amount reduced by the stiffness ratio. 35.9 EVALUATION OF SLIP CHARACTERISTICS...
