Previous literature has acknowledged the favorable impact of internationalization on firm performance. Through thorough review, scarce literature has been devoted to the internationalization endeavor of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in a developing economy regardless of a big economic role that these firm may play. Moreover, internationalization is usually examined in exporting or direct foreign investment forms despite its complex and multifaceted nature.

In this paper, the author seek to analyze the role of several determinants in the process of internationalization of Tunisian SMEs in Africa, and consequently their performance. Thanks to a quantitative study carried out among 46 companies analyzed under SPSS and Smart PLS, the results demonstrate the importance of the total mediating role of international entrepreneurial orientation (OEI) in the relationship between competitiveness and international performance. However, networking only generates a direct effect on international performance.

The paper first provides definitions of SMEs and describes the development and internationalization of Vietnamese SMEs. The issues with regard to the competitiveness and management capacity of Vietnamese SMEs in the integration economy are further discussed. Finally, the paper proposes some implications for government associations in improving management capacity to support Vietnamese SMEs in development and internationalization.
