The tertiary gene pool of bread wheat, to which Leymus racemosus belongs, has remained underutilized due to the current limited genomic resources of the species that constitute it. Continuous enrichment of public databases with useful information regarding these species is, therefore, needed to provide insights on their genome structures and aid successful utilization of their genes to develop improved wheat cultivars for effective management of environmental stresses.

Residual biomass production for fuel conversion represents a unique opportunity to avoid concerns about compromising food supply by using dedicated feedstock crops. Developing tomato varieties suitable for both food consumption and fuel conversion requires the establishment of new selection methods.

Cultivated barley belongs to the tertiary genepool of hexaploid wheat. Genes of interest can be transferred from barley into wheat through wide hybridization. The application of wheat-barley introgression lines could provide an excellent tool for the transfer of earliness, favourable amino acid composition, biotic stress resistance, abiotic stress tolerance, or good tillering ability into wheat.

Host plant resistance has been proposed as one of the most promising approaches in whitefly management. Already in 1995 two quantitative trait loci (Tv-1 and Tv-2) originating from S. habrochaites CGN1.1561 were identified that reduced the oviposition rate of the greenhouse whitefly (Trialeurodes vaporariorum).

Root is the prime organ that sucks water and nutrients from deep layer of soil. Wild barley diversity exhibits remarkable variation in root system architecture that seems crucial in its adaptation to abiotic stresses like drought. In the present study, we performed quantitative trait locus (QTL) mapping of root and related shoot traits under control and drought conditions using a population of wild barley introgression lines (ILs).

Limited genetic resource in the cultivated rice may hinder further yield improvement. Some valuable genes that contribute to rice yield may be lost or lacked in the cultivated rice. Identification of the quantitative trait locus (QTL) for yield-related traits such as thousand-grain weight (TGW) from wild rice speices is desired for rice yield improvement.

Freakish and rare or the tip of the iceberg? Both phrases have been used to refer to paramutation, an epigenetic drive that contravenes Mendel’s first law of segregation. Although its underlying mechanisms are beginning to unravel, its understanding relies only on a few examples that may involve transgenes or artificially generated epialleles.

Meloidogyne incognita is a devastating nematode that causes significant losses in cucumber production worldwide. Although numerous studies have emphasized on the susceptible response of plants after nematode infection, the exact regulation mechanism of M. incognita-resistance in cucumber remains elusive. Verification of an introgression line, ‘IL10–1’, with M. incognita-resistance provides the opportunity to unravel the resistance mechanism of cucumber against M. incognita.

Bacterial blight, which is caused by Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo), is a devastating rice disease worldwide. Rice introgression line H471, derived from the recurrent parent Huang-Hua-Zhan (HHZ) and the donor parent PSBRC28, exhibits broad-spectrum resistance to Xoo, including to the highly virulent Xoo strain PXO99A , whereas its parents are susceptible to PXO99A .

Human demand for wheat will continue to increase together with the continuous global population growth. Agronomic traits in wheat are susceptible to environmental conditions. Therefore, in breeding practice, priority is given to QTLs of agronomic traits that can be stably detected across multiple environments and over many years.

An investigation was taken up at Maize Research Station, Agricultural Research Institute, PJTSAU, Hyderabad during 2013-14. F1 material was generated by making crosses between BML 6 × CML 181 and BML 7 × CML 181for introgression of opaque 2 gene from Mexican donor CML181 through molecular breeding approach. The current study deals with the conversion of non QPM inbred lines to QPM with more than 4% lysine and 0.95% tryptophan.

Development of QPM (Quality Protein Maize) with high lysine and tryptophan is foremost important task in enhancing nutritional quality in maize through breeding programme. Marker assisted selection is the most feasible way of developing QPM hybrids in short time. The present investigation deals with conversion of elite normal maize inbred lines BML6 and BML7 (parental lines of DHM117 hybrid) into QPM lines using marker assisted selection. The nutritional quality of maize is enhanced by introgression of the opaque2 (o2) gene along with numerous modifiers for kernel hardness.

Drought is a major abiotic stress that causes a great reduction in the yield of the key cereal crops including sorghum. As the crops are sessile, they evolved several drought tolerance component traits to combat the water stress. Among the drought adaptive traits, root architecture plays a major role in efficient capillary water absorption even under severe water scarce situations through early development and deep penetration of roots. Thus, introgression of root traits in the elite breeding lines would enhance the breeding efficiency for water-limited environments.

Among all the micro nutrient deficiencies, World Health Organization (WHO) had identified Vitamin A deficiency as the more dangerous and widespread micronutrient deficiencies in the world. In order to address this global problem, biofortification of Maize is considered to be a cost effective and sustainable approach. The present study was carried out to raise and identify high β- carotene maize lines of BC1F2 (UMI 1200 × HP 467-15)- C15-S79 population by phenotyping using HPLC along with genotyping of crtRB1 allele.

Bacterial blight (BB) and rice blast are the two most important diseases causing significant yield loss in rice, and they are endemic to several rice growing states of India. In Telangana and Andhra Pradesh states, the yield loss is very severe due to BB and blast. In order to address the above said issues, the efforts have been made by Institute of Biotechnology, Rajendranagar, Hyderabad, and developed MTU1010 and Tellahamsa introgression lines with bacterial blight (xa13 and Xa21) and blast (Pi54 and Pi1) resistance genes by backcrossing with donor parents.

Phenotypic screening during kharif 2015 and evaluation of Sub1 introgressed lines in Ranjit and Bahadur for submergence tolerance was done with the 35 genotypes. Out of 35 genotypes 32 were Sub1 introgressed BC2F3 lines (24 BC2F3 lines of the cross -Ranjit x Swarna-Sub1and 8 BC2F3 lines of the cross -Bahadur x Swarna-Sub1) with three parents i.e. Ranjit, Bahadur, and Swarna-Sub1. The phenotypic screening of genotypes showed that all Sub1 introgressed lines had significantly higher survival rates as compared with the original recipient parents whereas less change in plant height was observed.

In the present study, we have introgressed two major genes, viz., Xa21 and Pi54 conferring resistance against bacterial blight (BB) and blast, respectively into an Indian rice variety MTU1010. Breeding line of Akshyadhan (RP6132) possessing Xa21 and Pi54 was used to transfer the target traits into the susceptible parent MTU1010, which is highly susceptible to both BB and blast diseases, which limits its spread to the disease endemic areas.
