There are still many questions related to aseptic femoral stem loosening. Systemic and local immune responses to the implanted “foreign body” is one of the reasons for loosening. The purpose of the study was to measure metal ion concentration (Ti, Co, Cr, Mo, Ni, Al) around loosened femoral stems and compare their levels around uncemented and cemented implants.

To promote and enhance the biological responses of implant hydroxyapatite (HAP) coatings, these are modified by substitution with various ions for the development of bioactive bone implants. In the present work, we have fabricated a MgO/Tb,Eu-HAP dual substituted hydroxyapatite coating on borate passivated 316L stainless steel (316L SS) by the electrodeposition method.

In this study we investigated depth distributions of elements in the multilayer structures of TiO2/SiO2/Si before and after ion irradiation. The samples were implanted with Ne+, Ar+, Kr+ and Xe+ ions. For each implantation the multilayer structures were irradiated by the ions with energies of 100, 150, 200 and 250 keV.

Aluminum substrates are irradiated with chromium ions and the steam condensation heat transfer performance on these surfaces is examined. Filmwise condensation is induced on the surface of aluminum specimens irradiated with chromium ion dose of less than 1016 ions/cm2 while dropwise condensation occurs on the specimens irradiated with chromium ion dose of 5
1016 ions/cm2 in the range of ion energy from 70 to 100 keV.

This paper presents a Monte-Carlo code to simulate the time sequences of the β-decay following implantation of a continuous radioactive ion beam into a segmented silicon detector. We extended our simulation to the β-delayed neutron process. An analysis procedure, which has been developed to obtain simultaneously the β-decay half-life and the β-delayed multi-neutron emission probability, was verified by the simulation data.

Since chemical vapor deposition of carbon-containing precursors onto transition metals tends to develop as the preferred growth process for the mass production of graphene films, the deep understanding of its mechanism becomes mandatory. In the case of nickel, which represents an economically viable catalytic substrate, the solubility of carbon is significant enough so that the growth mechanism proceeds in at least two steps: the dissolution of carbon in the metal followed by the precipitation of graphene at the surface.

The interest in the optical properties of nanoparticles dates back to Faraday’s experiments on nanoscale gold. Ion implantation represents a particularly useful means by which to modify the surface properties of a variety of materials. This prosaic statement, however, does not convey the depth of basic understanding which has been developed to fully utilize the advantages of ion implantation. The interaction of a host lattice with the energetic beams produces metastable states and structures which cannot be achieved by other means. However, ion implantation also requires an understanding of the fundamental physics and chemistry that dictate the interaction of the ion beam and the target.
