Ebook "Molecular biology of metal homeostasis and detoxification: From microbes to man" brings together current knowledge of the molecular basis of metal homeostasis and detoxification in various eukaryotic model systems, including yeasts, plants, and mammals. It focuses on the cellular systems controlling metal transport, intracellular distribution, and immobilization as well as on systems regulating metal-dependent transcription.

GTN stimulation increased both CRLR/ CGRPR1 expression, and immunostaining was apparent in microglia and meningeal cells. This study showed for the first time that GTN modulates intracellular iron trafficking regulated by storage and transport proteins expressed in meningeal cells and glia. CRLR/ CGRPR1 expression might be related to altered iron homeostasis and they both may stimulate nociceptive pathways activated in migraine.

Aedes aegypti is the principle vector of many arboviruses, including dengue virus and Zika virus, which are transmitted when an infected female mosquito takes a blood meal in order to initiate vitellogenesis. During blood digestion, ~ 10 mM heme-iron is ingested into the midgut lumen.

Iron is one of the essential mineral for all organisms and its deficiency leads to many serious problems in human being worldwide. Plants have evolved with specific ZIP transporters to uptake and transport the iron from the soil. IRT2 is one of the ZIPs family members, which has a role in uptake of Fe2+ from the soil. Indian barnyard millet (E. frumentacea L.) is one of the rich sources of iron among millets. IRT2 gene of Indian barnyard millet is up regulated under iron deficient condition and hence we isolated EfIRT2 gene.

Hepcidin (H25) is a hormone peptide synthesized by the liver that binds to ferroportin and blocks iron export. In this study, H25 was inhibited by administration of single and multiple doses of an anti-H25 monoclonal antibody Ab 12B9m in cynomolgus monkeys. The objective of this analysis was to develop a pharmacodynamic model describing the role of H25 in regulating iron homeostasis and the impact of hepcidin inhibition by Ab 12B9m. Total serum H25 and Ab 12B9m were determined in each animal. Corresponding measurements of serum iron and hemoglobin (Hb) were obtained.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small non-coding RNAs that regulate gene expression at the posttranscriptional level in eukaryotes. In rice, MIR7695 expression is regulated by infection with the rice blast fungus Magnaporthe oryzae with subsequent down-regulation of an alternatively spliced transcript of natural resistanceassociated macrophage protein 6 (OsNramp6). NRAMP6 functions as an iron transporter in rice.

Deficiency of micronutrients in soil particularly, that of Fe is a major nutritional and production constraint worldwide. We hypothesize a role of sulphur nutrition in altering the Fe deficiency tolerance response of crop plants. Present investigation was conducted to elucidate the role of S in regulating uptake and in-plant partitioning of Fe in bread and durum wheat through a field and a nutrient solution culture experiment.

Iron overload has recently been associated with the changes in the bone microstructure that occur in osteoporosis. However, the effect of iron overload on osteoblasts is unclear. The purpose of this study was to explore the function of divalent metal transporter 1 (DMT1) in the pathological processes of osteoporosis.

Our previous research defined two tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) genotypes: high cadmium (Cd) accumulator YSL189 and low Cd accumulator HZ903. Further hydroponics experiments investigated the different tolerance mechanisms to Cd stress between YSL189 and HZ903 at the seedling stage.

The cysteine-rich peptide hepcidin is known to be an antimicrobial peptide and iron transport regulator that has been found in both fish and mam-mals. Recently, we found two different types (designated Hep-JF1 and Hep-JF2) of hepcidin cDNA in the Japanese flounder,Paralichthys oliva-ceus, by expressed sequence tag analysis. The identity of amino acid sequences between Hep-JF1 and Hep-JF2 was 51%. The Hep-JF1 and Hep-JF2 genes both consist of three exons and two introns, and both exist as single copies in the genome. ...

HFE is a type 1 transmembrane protein that becomes N-glycosylated dur-ing transport to the cell membrane. It influences cellular iron concentra-tions through multiple mechanisms, including regulation of transferrin binding to transferrin receptors. The importance of glycosylation in HFE localization and function has not yet been studied.
