Biochemical variability among the 15 isolates of Alternaria isolates from different locations of West Bengal was investigated in respect of isozyme to observe the polymorphism among the isolates. Electrophoretic separation of the extracts was carried out on native PAGE following the procedure and gels were stained for different enzymes. The activity of α- esterase produced distinctive bands that were dark brown, whereas the activity of β- esterase produced bands that were dark pink so that α- esterase and βesterase were scored very easily.

The genetic polymorphism revealed by biochemical markers (protein and isozymes) in plant population have been extensively used to, assess the genetic variability, confirm hybridity of F1s, assure purity of cultivar and establish relationship between species. Electrophoretic protein analysis holds potential utility in breeding programmes of wheat through helping in the unequivocal characterization of varieties used. Sixteen wheat genotypes along with their 32 F1’s were characterized by using protein profile polymorphism in seeds through SDS-PAGE.

In this study the aspartate aminotransferase (AAT, E.C. 2.6.1.1), phosphoglucomutase (PGM, E.C. 5.4.2.2) and phosphoglucose isomerase (PGI, E.C. 5.3.1.9) isozyme patterns of nine different diploid and tetraploid wild wheat species belonging to the Aegilops L. and Triticum L. genera were analysed electrophoretically, using horizontal starch gel and non-denaturating polyacrylamide gel (only for AAT).
