The objective of the study was to formulate suitable management of sucking pests of lady’s finger with the use of some new safe molecules and less harmful to beneficial insects and environment.

Abelmoschus esculentus (L.) Moench, commonly known as ‘ladies finger’ or ‘bhindi’ is an economically important common vegetable crop cultivated throughout the tropical and warm temperate regions of the world. Induced mutation is highly effective in enhancing natural genetic resources and has been used in developing improved cultivars. The effect of gamma irradiation on various morphological and yield attributing characters in M2 generation were studied.

Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus L.), locally known as Bhendi or ladies finger, is one of the most important vegetable crop grown in AP in all the seasons. Presently okra is grown in an area of twenty three thousand hectares and production is estimated at about 4.39 metric tonnes. The major problem in okra is yellow vein mosaic virus. The main area is occupied by hybrids from private sector. Different cultivars require different climatic condition and the performance of these entries depend on their adoptability to a particular climate and soil conditions.

It is valued for its medicinal properties to cure renal colic, leucorrhoea, chronic dysentery and goitre due to high iodine content in fruits. In okra, a large number of varieties have been developed but substantial increase in productivity could not be realized. There is a necessary to improve the yield per unit area to achieve the increased production from a limited land.

The estimates of components of genetic variation in okra revealed that additive component ( D ˆ ) was significant for all traits i.e. days to first flowering, days to first pod picking, plant height, number of nodes, internodal length, pod length, pod girth, avg. pod weight, number of pods per plant, pod yield per plant (g), number of seeds per pod, 100 seed weight (g), seed yield per plant (g) and pod yield (t/ha).
