This study focuses on experimental testing and subsequent numerical analysis of impacted and pre-loaded composite coupons and bonded composite scarf joints under varying impact conditions. A methodology will be developed for the numerical modelling of preloaded impact tests to enable capture of critical failure modes and ultimate failure. The main aim is to validate a modelling strategy that will provide accurate failure characterisation of the tested joints using numerical analysis.

The aim of this Master of Engineering (MEng) - Aerospace thesis is to study the structural response and failure of aerospace grade composites during exposure to fire. Key aspects of the research are to analyse the thermal and mechanical responses of laminates and sandwich composites in high temperature and fire environments, which result in softening and structural failure. The research is concentrated on carbon/epoxy laminates and sandwich composites, which are the most common composite materials used in aerospace structures.

In this study, the impact response of glass/epoxy laminates interleaved by Polycaprolactone (PCL) nanofibers is considered. PCL is a thermoplastic polymer, which is a good choice for toughening epoxy-based composite. The impact tests were conducted on curved laminates and under 24 and 36J.

Biosynthesis of cholesterol represents one of the funda-mental cellular metabolic processes. SterolD14-reductase (D14-SR) is a microsomal enzyme involved in the con-version of lanosterol to cholesterol in mammals. Amino-acid sequence analysis of a 38-kDa protein puri®ed from bovine liver in our laboratory revealed 90% similarity with a human sterol reductase, SR-1, encoded by the TM7SF2gene, and with the C-terminal domain of human lamin B receptor.

Loss of functional emerin, a nuclear membrane protein, causes X-linked recessive Emery–Dreifuss muscular dystro-phy. Human MOK2 is a DNA-binding transcriptional repressor. Previously, we identified nuclear lamin A⁄C proteins as protein partners of hsMOK2. Fur-thermore, we found that a fraction of hsMOK2 protein was associated with the nuclear matrix. We therefore suggested that hsMOK2 interactions with lamin A⁄C and the nuclear matrix may be important for its ability to repress transcription.
