Ebook "The bearing capacity of building foundations" describes the different ways of ultimate bearing capacity determination of building foundations. This four-chapter book considers the effect of a horizontal force acting on a foundation. It also examines a situation where, beneath the foundation level in the zone of influence of the foundation there are two layers of soil, including the case where the second, lower layer is formed by incompressible rock.

Soil water in the coastal zones is more vulnerable to salinization. Soil-water vulnerability assessment is an effective tool for soil-water management. This study used the DRASTIC model, which is based on seven factors viz: Depth to soil water, recharge, soil-water bearing layer, soil media, topography, impact of root zone, and hydraulic conductivity to evaluate soil-water salinization potentiality of Ben Tre province.

In this article, the authors use Plaxis 2D software to simulate triaxial testing that shows the behavior of the geogrid reinforced soil structures under the effect of loads. Based on the Mohr - Rankine limit equilibrium conditions, the apparent cohesion generated by the geogrid layers is determined.

The organic dyes have beenwidely used in the textile industry for last decades. Nowadays, they have also known as toxic and polluted compounds because of their high persistence in soil sediments and water resources. These chemicals may be degraded to the carcinogens and toxic products under sunlight irradiation, affecting aquatic life and ecosystem.

This article presents the method for training a deep artificial neural network (DANN) for regression analysis; this method is based on the generalized delta rule. To illustrate the rule, a DANN with two hidden layers is used. The model’s construction is described in the form of mathematical equations. Subsequently, a DANN program is written in Visual C# .NET. This program is tested with the task of estimating the shear strength of soil samples.

The indicators of climate change in Central Europe, Hungary is showing a trend of decrease in rainfall, increase in temperature and especially extreme weather that is becoming more usual and unpredictable. The current study presents the application of the MIKE SHE model to examine the role of unsaturated soil settings and the effects of climate change on various hydrological parameters and water balance components.

Root is the prime organ that sucks water and nutrients from deep layer of soil. Wild barley diversity exhibits remarkable variation in root system architecture that seems crucial in its adaptation to abiotic stresses like drought. In the present study, we performed quantitative trait locus (QTL) mapping of root and related shoot traits under control and drought conditions using a population of wild barley introgression lines (ILs).

During the past decades, extensive parts of the Quercus brantii woodlands in the Zagros Mountains declined in size and habitat quality. We aimed to explore the variation of oak woodlands in the southern Zagros Mountains and to assess the vulnerability. We examined 49 plots at different altitudes and aspects, recorded the vascular plant species for tree and herb-layer composition, and collected data on topographic and edaphic factors.

In this study, archaeobotanical data were gathered from the Early, Middle, and Late Bronze Age layers (2400–1200 BC) of the Tatarlı Höyük exposed in the 2011–2012 excavation seasons in the Ceyhan district of Adana Province were evaluated. In 8 trenches relating to these periods, archaeological contexts such as inside areas, hearths, ovens, middens, ceramic pots, etc., as well as contexts with carbonized plant remains were recovered by using dry and wet sieving methods, corresponding in total to 90 soil samples.

In paper "Fine root vertical-seasonal distribution of Robinia pseudoacacia in relation to abiotic factors in a chronosequence in coastal saline alkali land of the Yellow River Delta, China", FRB, FRL, FRSA, SWC and soil nutrients increased, while SRL and SSC decreased with increasing stand age. Vertically, fine roots were concentrated in a 0–20 cm soil layer. SRL, SWC and SSC increased, while soil nutrients decreased with increasing soil depth.

Bioaccessibility and source-specific health risk of heavy metals in PM2.5 in a coastal city in China
Based on the combined positive matrix factorization-health risk (PMF-HR) model, industry, combustion, and traffic emission contributed the most to the health risk of Cr and Cd, followed by soil parent material layer. Our study provided a reliable method to calculate the bioaccessible heavy metal health risk and determine each potential source’s contribution to health risk.

The use of spun concrete piles under geological layer that has the thick soft soil layer reveals many flaws, many incidents of tilting pile or broken pile have occurred during construction process in many projects, cause great damage to the cost of the project as well as the slow construction progress. In this paper, the author analyzes the causes inclined piles during construction of spun concrete piles, as well as provide the method to determine the inclination of the pile along the pile body.

The paper presents a series of modified direct shear tests to investigate the interface shear strength between clay and nonwoven geotextile under different normal stresses and degrees of saturation. The modified direct shear apparatus consists of a 60 mm × 60 mm square shear box assembly with a 60 mm × 60 mm acrylic block inserted in the bottom shear box. A woven geotextile layer was glued to the top of the acrylic block, while the top shear box was filled by the compacted clayey soil.
