Leukocyte recruitment

Myokines are cytokines that are secreted by muscle cells during exercises, muscle development and pathology. Studies have shown that expression of some individual myokines was altered in tumors. However, comprehensive analyses of myokines’ expression in osteosarcoma (OS), the most common malignant tumor in musculoskeletal system, have not been performed.

The recruitment of leukocytes from the circulation into tissues requires leu-kocyte migration through the vascular endothelium. The mechanisms by which leukocytes attach and firmly adhere to the endothelial cell surface have been studied in detail. However, much less is known about the last step in this process, the diapedesis of leukocytes through the vascular endo-thelium.

Leukocyte rolling is an important step for the successful recruitment of leu-kocytes into tissue and occurs predominantly in inflamed microvessels and in high endothelial venules of secondary lymphoid organs. Leukocyte roll-ing is mediated by a group of C-type lectins, termed selectins. Three differ-ent selectins have been identified – P-, E- and L-selectin – which recognize and bind to crucial carbohydrate determinants on selectin ligands.
