The article investigates the politeness strategies employed in the speeches by US diplomats towards China and Vietnam. Quantitative and qualitative research approaches are applied to identify and analyze the linguistic devices that represent these strategies. The findings on politeness meta-strategies collected from two corpora denote different underlying intentions of US diplomats to China and Vietnam.

Universities worldwide have been rapidly utilising English-medium instruction (EMI) in the age of globalisation and internationalisation for its various benefits. Different aspects of EMI implementation have been studied, yet linguistic features of EMI lectures are still under consideration, especially in the context of Vietnam. Against this backdrop, the current study examined metadiscursive devices in EMI lectures conducted by a non-native English-speaking lecturer at Duy Tan University, a notable private university in central Vietnam, using the taxonomy developed by Dafouz & Perucha (2010).

To determine whether name and accent cues that the caller is Black shape physician offices’ responses to telephone-based requests for well-child visits. Linguistic profiling over the telephone is an aspect of structural racism that should be further studied and perhaps integrated into efforts to promote equitable access to care. Future research should look reactions to both name and accent, taking practice characteristics and regional differences into consideration.

This study was intended to provide sufficient information about syntactic features of the noun phrase in English and Vietnamese and clarify the similarities and differences between them as well. The results show that both English and Vietnamese noun phrases have a head noun; a noun phrase may consist of only one word in both languages; a noun phrase can be made from 2 nouns.

This article explores the lexico-semantic network through a brief examination of the English preposition "in" and its equivalent "trong" in Vietnamese. Working within a cognitive linguistic framework, the investigation presents the six clusters of senses of the preposition "in" based on Tyler and Evans’ research, thereby, via the contrastive analysis approach, indicating the similarities and differences in the way speakers of the two languages conceptualize the world via their spatial configuration.

This paper focuses on the investigation of the differences in multiple intelligences, learning styles, motivation and language learning strategies used by a successful and an unsuccessful foreign language learner. The study finds that the successful language learner has verbal/linguistic, intrapersonal and interpersonal intelligences while the unsuccessful one owns naturalistic intelligence. The study indicates that the successful learner was intrinsically motivated and the unsuccessful one studied English as foreign language to pass examination.
