  • Codeswitching, a product of bilingualism, is popular among bilinguals. Many researchers and educators consider codeswitching as a downgrading factor to the target language learning process while others perceive them as a natural product of bilingualism. This study investigates the frequency of codeswitching used among students and their attitudes towards this phenomenon.

  • In the paper it is argued that for some linguistic phenomena, current discourse representation structures are insufficiently finegrained, both from the perspective of serving as representation in NLP and from a truth conditional perspective. One such semantic phenomenon is uniqueness. It is demonstrated that certain elements are forced to have a unique interpretation, from a certain point in discourse onwards. This could be viewed as the semantic counterpart of surface order.

  • We present a notation for the declarative statement of morphological relationships and lexieal rules, based on the traditional notion of Word and Paradigm (cf Hockett 1954). The phenomenon of blocking arises from a generalized version of Kiparsky's (1973) Elsewhere Condition, stated in terms of ordering by subsumption over paradigms. Orthographic constraints on morphemic alternation are described by means of string equations (Siekmann 1975).

  • In one form or another, the phenomena associated with "meaning transfer" have become central issues in a lot of recent work on semantics. Speaking very roughly, we can partition approaches to the phenomenon along two dimensions, which yield four basic points of departure. In the first two, people have considered transfer in basically semantic or linguistic terms.

  • This paper presents a status quo of an ongoing research study of collocations – an essential linguistic phenomenon having a wide spectrum of applications in the field of natural language processing. The core of the work is an empirical evaluation of a comprehensive list of automatic collocation extraction methods using precision-recall measures and a proposal of a new approach integrating multiple basic methods and statistical classification.

  • Large scale efforts are underway to create dependency treebanks and parsers for Hindi and other Indian languages. Hindi, being a morphologically rich, flexible word order language, brings challenges such as handling non-projectivity in parsing. In this work, we look at non-projectivity in Hyderabad Dependency Treebank (HyDT) for Hindi. Non-projectivity has been analysed from two perspectives: graph properties that restrict non-projectivity and linguistic phenomenon behind non-projectivity in HyDT. ...

  • While labeled data is expensive to prepare, ever increasing amounts of unlabeled linguistic data are becoming widely available. In order to adapt to this phenomenon, several semi-supervised learning (SSL) algorithms, which learn from labeled as well as unlabeled data, have been developed. In a separate line of work, researchers have started to realize that graphs provide a natural way to represent data in a variety of domains.

  • This paper summarizes stratificational theory, and applies its linguistic methods in a sememic analysis of English prepositions. The phenomenon of interlocking diversification is shown to be quite generally present among the prepositions. Also, the analysis of prepositions is shown to entail a partial sememic analysis of other words; it therefore provides a starting point for the sememic analysis, on stratificational principles, of the rest of the language.
