The studies presented in this paper are performed in the general framework of transient coupled calculations with accurate neutron kinetics models able to characterize spatial decoupling in the core. An innovative fission matrix interpolation model has been developed with a correlated sampling technique associated to the Transient Fission Matrix (TFM) approach.

Despite a low-risk profile and few postoperative complications, patients in Africa were twice as likely to die after surgery when compared with the global average for postoperative deaths. Initiatives to increase access to surgical treatments in Africa therefore should be coupled with improved surveillance for deteriorating physiology in patients who develop postoperative complications, and the resources necessary to achieve this objective.

This studywas designed to yield data on the supramolecular organization of the phycobilisome apparatus from Synechocystis, and the possible effects of environmental stress on this arrangement. Phycobilisomes were dissociated ina low ionic strength solutionandaquantitative estimation of the protein components present in each subcomplex was obtained using liquid chromatography coupled on-line with a mass spectrometer equipped with an electrospray ion source (ESI-MS).

Platelet activation by thrombin plays a major role in the development of haemostasis and thrombosis. Thrombin activates human platelets by cleaving the N-terminal region of G-protein-coupled protease-activated receptors (PARs). On the other hand, the platelet membrane glycoprotein GPIb acts as a thrombin-binding site and promotes platelet activation by low thrombin concentrations. We present here new evidence in favour of a thrombin receptor function for GPIb. We have selected conditions in which thrombin– GPIb interactions were enhanced by thrombin immobiliza-tion....

Neurotransmitter transporters play a major role in achieving low concen-trations of their respective transmitter in the synaptic cleft. The GABA transporter GAT1 belongs to the family of Na + - and Cl – -coupled trans-port proteins which possess 12 putative transmembrane domains and three N-glycosylation sites in the extracellular loop between transmembrane domain 3 and 4.

A highly purified cytochromeb6f complex from the cyanobacterium Syn-echocystissp. PCC 6803 selectively binds one chlorophyll a and one caro-tenoid in analogy to the recent published structure from two other b6 f complexes. The unknown function of these pigments was elucidated by spectroscopy and site-directed mutagenesis. Low-temperature redox differ-ence spectroscopy showed red shifts in the chlorophyll and carotenoid spec-tra upon reduction of cytochrome b6, which indicates coupling of these pigments with the heme groups and thereby with the electron transport....

Pellagra: Treatment Treatment of pellagra consists of oral supplementation of 100–200 mg of nicotinamide or nicotinic acid three times daily for 5 days. High doses of nicotinic acid (2 g/d in a time-release form) are used for the treatment of elevated cholesterol and triglyceride levels and/or low high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol level (Chap. 350). Toxicity Prostaglandin-mediated flushing due to binding of the vitamin to a G protein–coupled receptor has been observed at daily doses as low as 50 mg of niacin when taken as a supplement or as therapy for dyslipidemia.
