Work experience is a key factor in hiring decision of managers. However, empirical evidence that early life experience matters is very limited. This thesis fills in the gap by examining how work experience affects managerial performance and managerial style in mutual funds. Using a sample of Chinese fund managers, we find performances and styles vary across managers of different career backgrounds. Notably, managers of research and especially government backgrounds show higher risk adjusted returns while taking on less systematic risk.

According to the free cash flow hypothesis, large free cash flows are likely to lead to managerial discretion and agency problems. This is because retaining free cash flows reduces the ability of capital market to monitor managers. The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between corporate governance and free cash flow for a sample of Canadian companies. This study does not find evidence supporting the agency costs of free cash flow hypothesis. The results show that better governed firms have larger free cash flows.

This paper examines whether, why, and how managerial ability is associated with firms’ investment behavior. Specifically, we focus on the effect of managerial ability on extreme investment behavior. We define expansionary (contractionary) investments as investing significantly more (less) than what is expected based on the firm’s sales growth and industry membership.

This research investigates the current white spaces of green marketing and country of origin effects, where new research could contribute theoretical value. The conducted research examines American and Swedish consumers’ environmental awareness, willingness and initiative in contributing to their societies for future sustainability. Using a sample of 118 consumers from an intermediated questionnaire for the offline market, a conceptual framework was developed where the study created the foundation and reasonable support for the purposed framework.
