  • This study is conducted based on the hypothesis of an accident from Fengcheng NPP with an incident level of 7, equivalent to the Fukushima accident. A modeling system has been established with different failure scenarios based on the Delft3D model. The research results will provide more insights into the extent and scope of the incident and the impact of meteorological conditions and dynamics on the propagation and distribution of radiation when an incident occurs.

  • The paper aims to describe in detail the experiment for dynamic balancing of rotors to verify the infl uence coeffi cient method. The direct calibration on two-plane rigid rotor using this method showed that a signifi cant reduction of unbalances can be obtained. The results can be helpful for the design and safety assessment of dynamic systems equipped with rotors for marine engineering.

  • In addition to the role of river flow, it is strongly influenced by marine dynamics. The erosion and accretion activities occur mainly in estuaries. The results above show trend of river development: i) Meandering channel is the most vulnerable to changes for morphology of channel by erosion and accretion of sediment and can create 1–2 horseshoe pools by the river change line; ii) Braided channel mainly changes in the bottom of channel by the formation of channel bar; iii) Straight channel mainly changes in the estuary (the mouth of the river can be moved, enlarged or narrowed).

  • In marine transportation, aerodynamic performance is important for the ships, especially for the small passenger fast ships. It has affected the service speed, air resistance acting on hull, power energy as well as roll, pitch, yaw and stability of the ships.

  • This work proposes the dynamics of a 3-D overhead-type crane operated in offshore condition that considers the effects of sea wave excitation as well as wind-induced force. The crane mounted on a ship with actuator saturations is taken into consideration and its modeling is derived from the Lagrange formulation.

  • We present an overview of selected papers published since 2000 that interpret Late Quaternary multi-proxy palaeoclimate records from Turkey and the surrounding region of the Near-Middle East and Mediterranean region. Existing records in Turkey are rather limited in their resolution, and the locations studied thus far reflect a limited spatial and temporal distribution.

  • In this work, the commercial Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), ANSYS-Fluent V.14.5 has been used to illustrate the effects of rudder and blade pitch on hydrodynamic performances of a propeller. At first, the characteristic curves of a container ship propeller are computed. Then, effects of rudder on hydrodynamic performances of the propeller in the both cases of the propeller with and without rudder have been investigated.

  • This study focuses on the use of remotely sensed data for monitoring coastline changes in the Red River Delta during the 1998 to 2008 period. For the satellite image data processing, the shoreline was defined as the mean sea level on the muddy coast where the tide is the dominant dynamic factor and as the mean high sea level on the sandy coast where the ocean waves are the dominant dynamic factor.

  • The Department of Fisheries and Oceans has maintained an active seal research program for many years. This program is aimed at better understanding seal populations fluctuations and the factors that influence them, as well as the role of seals in marine ecosystems. Recently, most of the research has focussed on the population dynamics and the predation on fish by seals. Studies on these aspects will continue to gain a better understanding of seal populations and of their interactions with other components of their ecosystem.

  • Nowadays, environmental issues including air and water pollution, climate change, overexploitation of marine ecosystems, exhaustion of fossil resources, conservation of biodiversity are receiving major attention from the public, stakeholders and scholars from the local to the planetary scales. It is now clearly recognized that human activities yield major ecological and environ- mental stresses with irreversible loss of species, destruction of habitat or cli- mate catastrophes as the most dramatic examples of their effects.

  • Many Modern Ecological problems such as rain forest destruction, decreasing marine harvests, and fire suppression are directly or indirectly anthropogenic. Zooarchaeology and Conservation Biology presents an argument that conservation biology and wildlife management cannot afford to ignore zooarchaeological research--the identification and analysis of faunal remains recovered from archaeological deposits. The editors contend that we can learn important lessons by studying long-term human and nonhuman influences on biota and ecosystems.

  • Challenges to sustaining the productivity of oceanic and coastal fisheries have become more critical and complex as these fisheries reach the upper limits to ocean harvests. In addition, it is now clear that we are managing interactive and dynamic food webs rather than sets of independent single-species populations.

  • This book began its evolution in 1999 when the British Antarctic Survey, where I worked at the time, began a new research programme on the management of marine ecosystems. This programme concentrated upon the krill-based ecosystem at SouthGeorgia which has been the subject of almost continuous study since the Discovery Expeditions in the 1920s. Latterly, international efforts to understand the dynamics of this ecosystem and the wider Southern Ocean have been coordinated by the Commission for the Conservation of AntarcticMarine Living Resources (CCAMLR)....

  • The world ocean has somewhere between 10 000 and 100 000 seamounts more than 1 km tall and as many as 1 000 000 features over 100 m tall. These are some of the least understood habitats on the planet. Large seamounts, particularly those close to or within the photic zone, support and attract rich biotic communities and are important for the status of marine food webs and biodiversity. Intensive boom-and-bust fi sheries have depleted fi sh populations and damaged or destroyed associated benthic communities.

  • Sediment tracing is a young and rapidly growing branch of sedimentology. Successful sediment tracing began in the mid 1950’s with the advent of radioactive and fluorescent-marking techniques. Although still in infancy, modern tracing techniques clearly offer the means for delineating the dynamics of many different sedimentary environments. This particular sediment-tracing study was begun in 1959 during the writer’s graduate studies under Dr. K. 0. Emery at the University of Southern California. Due to the interest and encouragement of Dr.
