In this study, calcite and zeolite minerals, with well-known incombustibility properties, were used together with huntite hydromagnesite as auxiliary minerals to obtain better mechanical properties. In this context, a synergistic effect was created by adding zeolite and calcite to polymer composite systems containing huntite hydromagnesite, and flame retardant polypropylene matrix composites were produced using a twin screw extruder.

This is due to the reduction of calcium hydroxide and the increase of secondary CSH in the cement matrix from the pozzolanic reaction of a mineral admixture. The result of the study with modern experiment methods confirmed the improvement of strength and durability for hardened cement using mineral admixture, thereby ensuring the good applicability of the additional admixtures used in concrete of marine structures.

The results showed that SOM content was higher in horizon A, whereas mineral matrix elements Al, Fe, and Mg contents were higher in horizon B. Ca and P contents gradually decreased with soil depth due to the influence of fertilizer. Three types of trace element concentration profiles were identified: (1) decrease with depth for Cd and Hg

In this study, we investigated whether osteoporosis-like phenotype could be induced in the transgenic larvae when heat-shock was applied at earlier time points, namely when larvae were at 1,2,3,4,5, or 6 dpf. The obtained results show that heat-shocks from the time point of 3 dpf onwards resulted in osteoporosis-like phenotype, while heat-shock at 1 or 2 dpf did not affect mineralized bone matrix in 11 dpf larvae.

Osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis, all have one clear common denominator; an altered turnover of bone. However, this may be more complex than a simple change in bone matrix and mineral turnover. While these diseases share a common tissue axis, their manifestations in the area of pathology are highly diverse, ranging from sclerosis to erosion of bone in different regions.

Bone formation occurs by two distinct mechanisms, namely, periosteal ossification and endochondral ossification. In both mechanisms, osteoblasts play an important role in the secretion and mineralization of bone-specific extracellular matrix. Differentiation and maturation of osteoblasts is a prerequisite to bone formation and is regulated by many factors.

Bone fragility and related fractures are increasingly being recognized as an important diabetic complication. Mesenchymal progenitors often serve as an important source of bone formation and regeneration. In the present study, we have evaluated the effects of diabetes on osteoblastogenesis of mesenchymal progenitors.

Compound samples based on the mineral-like magnesium potassium phosphate matrix MgKPO4 6H2O were synthesized by solidification of high level waste surrogate. Phase composition and structure of synthesized samples were studied by XRD and SEM methods. Compressive strength of the compounds is 12 ± 3 MPa.

Prof. Wang is studying how bone cells sense external mechanical forces, which allows living bone tissue to adapt to its mechanical usage. With the absence of mechanical stimulation (such as the microgravity for astronauts) and loss of sensitivities of detecting the loads (such as during aging), bone mass decreases and bone structure degenerates, eventually leading to bone fracture. recent studies have found that osteocytes—the most abundant cells buried inside the mineralized matrix—serve as sensors that orchestrate bone adaptation....

Fluorosis is the result of an excessive intake of fluoride during enamel formation and calcification, usually the third month of gestation through the eighth year after birth. When high concentrations of fluoride are absorbed by the body, the metabolic function of the ameloblasts is altered, which leads to defective matrix formation and hypocalcification (Figure 7-2). This type of discoloration can affect the primary and the permanent dentition. Histologically, a hypomineralized porous subsurface, covered by a well-mineralized surface enamel layer, is observed.

Among molluscs, the shell biomineralization process is controlled by a set of extracellular macromolecular components secreted by the calcifying mantle. In spite of several studies, these components are mainly known in bivalves from only few members of pteriomorph groups.

In the biomineralization processes, proteins are thought to control the polymorphism and morphology of the crystals by forming complexes of structural and mineral-associated proteins. To identify such proteins, we have searched for proteins that may form high-molecular-weight (HMW) aggregates in the matrix of fish otoliths that have aragonite and vaterite as their crystal polymorphs.

Natural groundwater quality changes start in the soil, where infiltrating rainfall dissolves carbon dioxide from biological activity in the soil to produce weak carbonic acid that may assist removal of soluble minerals from the underlying rocks, e.g. calcite cements. At the same time, soil organisms consume some of the oxygen that was dissolved in the rainfall. In temperate and humid climates with significant recharge, groundwater moves relatively quickly through the aquifer.

Polymer nanocomposites are commonly defined as the combination of a polymer matrix and additives that have at least one dimension in the nanometer range. The additives can be one-dimensional (examples include nanotubes and fibres), two-dimensional (which include layered minerals like clay), or three- dimensional (including spherical particles). Over the past decade, polymer nanocomposites have attracted considerable interests in both academia and industry, owing to their outstanding mechanical properties like elastic stiffness and strength with only a small amount of the nanoadditives.

Liver fibrosis ranks as the second cause of death in México's productive-age population. This pathology is characterized by acummulation of fibrillar proteins in hepatic parenchyma causing synthetic and metabolic disfunction. Remotion of excessive fibrous proteins might result in benefit for subjects increasing survival index. The goal of this work was to find whether the already known therapeutical effect of human urokinase Plasminogen Activator and human Matrix Metalloprotease 8 extends survival index in cirrhotic animals.
