Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are a common medical condition in Vietnam and around the world. Fonseca Anamnestic Index (FAI) is a quick and simple questionnaire to diagnose TMD. Objectives: (1) To evaluate the accuracy and reliability of FAI in the diagnosis of TMD and (2) to suggest adjustments to enhance the clinical value of FAI.

The core list presents a list of minimum medicine needs for a basic health‐care system, listing the most efficacious, safe and cost‐effective medicines for priority conditions. Priority conditions are selected on the basis of current and estimated future public health relevance, and potential for safe and cost‐effective treatment. The complementary list presents essential medicines for priority diseases, for which specialized diagnostic or monitoring facilities, and/or specialist medical care, and/or specialist training are needed.

Normally, any ferromagnetic or ferrimagnetic material undergoes a transition to a paramagnetic state above its Curie temperature. Superparamagnetism is different from this standard transition since it occurs below the Curie temperature of the material. Superparamagnetism occurs in nanoparticles which are single domain. This is possible when their diameter is below 3–50 nm, depending on the materials.

Certain amino acids, like glutamine and leucine, induce an anabolic response in liver. They activate p70 ribosomal protein S6 kinase (p70S6K) and acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC) involved in protein and fatty acids synthesis, respectively. In contrast, the AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), which senses the energy state of the cell and becomes activated under metabolic stress, inactivates by phosphorylation key enzymes in biosynthetic pathways thereby conserving ATP.

Protein refolding is currently a fundamental problem in biophysics and molecular biology. We have studied the refolding process of frutalin, a tetrameric lectin that presents structural homology with jacalin but shows a more marked biological activity. The initial state in our refolding puzzle was that proteins were unfolded after thermal denaturation or denaturation induced by guanidine hydrochloride, and under both conditions, frutalin was refolded.

Bovineb-lactoglobulin was hydrolyzed with trypsin or chymotrypsin in the course of heat treatment at 55, 60 and 65°C at neutral pH. At these temperaturesb-lactoglobulin undergoes signi®cant but reversible structural changes. In the conditions used in the present study,b-lactoglobulinwas virtually insensitive to proteolysis by either enzyme at room temperature, but underwent extensive proteolysis when either proteasewas present during the heat treatment.

The cAMP-dependent protein kinase (PKA) signaling pathway plays a major role in a number of pathophysio-logical conditions. However, there have been conflicting evidences regarding the action of cAMP/PKA on nuclear factor-jB(NF-jB). Inthis study, wehaveexplored the effect of cAMP/PKA on NF-jBactivity and determined its molecular mechanism. PKA activating agents or expression of thecatalyticsubunitofPKA(PKAc) inhibitedtheNF-jB-dependent reporter gene expression induced by tumor nec-rosis factora(TNFa). ...

To examine whether valinomycin induces a mitochondrial permeability transition (PT), we investigated its effects on mitochondrial functions under various conditions. The acceleration of mitochondrial respiration and swelling, induced by valinomycin, were found to be insensitive to inhibitors of the ordinary PT, indicating that valinomycin does not induce the ordinary PT. Results of experiments usingmitochondria isolated fromtransgenicmice expressing human bcl-2 also supported this conclusion.

Acomputational approach is used to analyse temporal gene expression in the context of metabolic regulation. It is based on the assumption that cells developed optimal adaptation strategies to changing environmental conditions. Time-dependent enzyme profiles are calculatedwhichoptimize the function of a metabolic pathway under the constraint of limited total enzymeamount. For linearmodel pathways it is shown thatwave-like enzyme profiles are optimal for a rapid substrate turnover.

The transcription factor v-Myb is a potent inducer of myeloid leukemias, and its cellular homologue c-Myb plays a crucial role in the regulation of hematopoiesis. Recently, Bies and coworkers (Bies, J., Markus, J. & Wolff, L. (2002)J. Biol. Chem, 277, 8999–9009) presented evidence that murine c-Myb can be sumoylated under overexpression conditions in COS7 cells when cotrans-fected with FLAG-tagged SUMO-1.

UMP-CMP kinase catalyses an important step in the phosphorylationofUTP, CTPanddCTP. It is also involved in the necessary phosphorylation by cellular kinases of nucleoside analogs used in antiviral therapies. The reactivity of human UMP-CMP kinase towards natural substrates and nucleotide analogs was reexamined. The expression of the recombinant enzyme and conditions for stability of the enzyme were improved. Substrate inhibition was observed for UMP and CMP at concentrations higher than 0.2 mM, but not for dCMP.

A new baculovirus-based fluorescence resonance energy transfer (Bv-FRET) assay for measuringmultimerization of cell surface molecules in living cells is described. It has been demonstrated that gonadotropin-releasing hormone recep-tor (GnRH-R) was capable of forming oligomeric com-plexes in the plasma membrane under normal physiological conditions. The mouse gonadotropin-releasing hormone receptor GnRH-R was used to evaluate the efficiency and potential applications of this assay.

The heat- and pressure-induced unfolding of the glycosyl-ated and unglycosylated forms of mature carboxypeptidase Y and the precursor procarboxypeptidase Y were analysed by differential scanning calorimetry and/or by their intrinsic fluorescence in the temperature range of 20–75Corthe pressure range of 0.1–700 MPa. Under all conditions, the precursor form showed a clear two-state transition from a folded to an unfolded state, regardless of the presence of the carbohydrate moiety.

Catalytic antibodies capable of digesting crucial proteins of pathogenic bac-teria have long been sought for potential therapeutic use. Helicobacter pyloriurease plays a crucial role for the survival of this bacterium in the highly acidic conditions of human stomach. The HpU-9 monoclonal anti-body (mAb) raised againstH. pyloriurease recognized thea-subunit of the urease, but only slightly recognized theb-subunit. However, when isolated both the light and the heavy chains of this antibody were mostly bound to the b-subunit....

In eukaryotes, pre-rRNA processing depends on a large number of non-ribosomal trans-acting factors that form large and intriguingly organized complexes. A novel nucleolar protein, Nop53p, was isolated by using Nop17p as bait in the yeast two-hybrid system. Nop53p also interacts with a second nucleolar protein, Nip7p. A carbon source-conditional strain with the NOP53coding sequence under the control of theGAL1promoter did not grow in glucose-containing medium, showing the phenotype of an essential gene. ...

There is still a controversy over the mechanism of promoter DNA strand separation upon open transcription complex (RPo) formation by Escheri-chia coli RNA polymerase: is it a single or a stepwise process controlled by Mg 2+ ions and temperature? To resolve this question, the kinetics of pseudo-first-order oxidation of thymine residues by KMnO4 in the )11…+2 DNA region of RPo at thekPRpromoter was examined under single-hit conditions as a function of temperature (13–37C) in the absence or presence of 10 mmMgCl2....

Botulinum neurotoxin type A (BoNT⁄A), the most toxic substance known to mankind, is produced by Clostridium botulinumtype A as a complex with a group of neurotoxin-associated proteins (NAPs) through polycis-tronic expression of a clustered group of genes. NAPs are known to protect BoNT against adverse environmental conditions and proteolytic digestion. Hemagglutinin-33 (Hn-33) is a 33 kDa subcomponent of NAPs that is resistant to protease digestion, a feature likely to be involved in the protec-tion of the botulinum neurotoxin from proteolysis. ...
