Composite materials have gained traction in the world today and are becoming of common use in industrial and specialized applications in general due to their flexible nature that involves mixing through layers or matrixes the components of various substances and therefore, a percentage of each substance’s physical properties.

This paper focuses on Monte Carlo simulations aimed at calculating the dose response of the RadFET dosimeter, when exposed to the complex CHARM mixed-fields, at CERN. We study how the dose deposited in the gate oxide (SiO2) of the RadFET is affected by the energy threshold variation in the Monte Carlo simulations as well as the materials and sizes of scoring volumes.

In this work, we have analyzed this problem for the example of N,N-dialkylamides in the presence of uranyl nitrate experimentally. Furthermore, we present a minimal model at nanoscale that allows rationalizing the experimental phenomena by connecting the molecular, mesoscopic and macroscopic scale and that allows predicting qualitative trends in viscosity.

The membrane lipid composition of planctomycetes capable of the an-aerobic oxidation of ammonium (anammox), i.e. Candidatus‘Brocadia anammoxidans’ and Candidatus‘Kuenenia stuttgartiensis’, was shown to be composed mainly of so-called ladderane lipids. These lipids are com-prised of three to five linearly concatenated cyclobutane moieties withcis ring junctions, which occurred as fatty acids, fatty alcohols, alkyl glycerol monoethers, dialkyl glycerol diethers and mixed glycerol ether⁄esters. ...

Proteolysis of single polypeptide mammalian purple acid phosphatases (PAPs) results in the loss of an interaction between the loop residue Asp146 and the active site residues Asn91 and⁄or His92. While Asn91 is a ligand to the divalent metal of the mixed-valent di-iron center, the role of His92 in the catalytic mechanism is unknown. Site-directed mutagenesis of His92 was performed to examine the role of this residue in single polypep-tide PAP.

Riftia pachyptila(Vestimentifera) is a giant tubeworm living around the volcanic deep-sea vents of the East Pacific Rise. This animal is devoid of a digestive tract and lives in an intimate symbiosis with a sulfur-oxidizing chemoauto-trophic bacterium. This bacterial endosymbiont is localized in the cells of a richly vascularized organ of the worm: the trophosome.

The flavoenzyme d-amino acid oxidase from Rhodotorula gracilisis a homodimeric protein whose dimeric state has been proposed to occur as a result of (a) the electrostatic interactions between positively charged resi-dues of thebF5–bF6 loop of one monomer and negatively charged residues belonging to thea-helices I3¢ and I3¢¢ of the other monomer, and (b) the interaction of residues (e.g. Trp243) belonging to the two monomers at the mixed interface region.

We report a detailed kinetic investigation of the aminoglycosides neomycin B and neamine as inhibitors of the lethal factor protease fromBacillus anthracis. Both inhibitors display a mixed-type, noncompetitive kinetic pat-tern, which suggests the existence of multiple enzyme–inhibitor binding sites or the involvement of multiple structural binding modes at the same site.

We previously discovered that BapA, a bacterialb-peptidyl aminopepti-dase, is able to hydrolyze two otherwise metabolically inert b-peptides [Geueke B, Namoto K, Seebach D & Kohler H-PE (2005) J Bacteriol187, 5910–5917]. Here, we describe the purification and characterization of two distinct bacterialb-peptidyl aminopeptidases that originated from different environmental isolates.

Abstract. A series of ground La(Co,Cu)O3 perovskite-type mixed oxides prepared by reactive grinding has been characterized by X-Ray diffraction (XRD), BET, H2-TPR, O2-TPD, and CO disproportionation. All ground samples show a rather high specific surface area and nanometric particles.
