  • This research uses empirical data from a cross-sectional survey of households that was specifically designed to examine the vulnerability and resilience of households to global macroeconomic shocks. In early 2011 six communities in each country were surveyed, ranging from inner-urban squatter settlements of the respective capital cities to some of the most geographically distant areas in each country. The original contribution of this thesis is that it marks the first time that the micro effects of macroeconomic events are studied in such a broad range of communities in either country.

  • Nowadays, the concept of globalization seems reduced to the size of the market and, export is only one aspect of the phenomenon of globalization. In global industries, it is now the most competitive positions and bases of competitiveness which should be established worldwide. Therefore, globalization raises strategies to become more global rather than local. Those strategies consist in expanding and coordinating all activities of the company worldwide.

  • Semi-synthetic cephalosporin antibiotics belong to the top 10 of most sold drugs, and are produced from 7-aminodes-acetoxycephalosporanic acid (7-ADCA). Recently new routes have been developed which allow for the production of adipyl-7-ADCA by a novel fermentation process. To complete the biosynthesis of 7-ADCAa highly active adipyl acylase is needed for deacylation of the adipyl derivative. Such an adipyl acylase can be generated from known glu-taryl acylases.

  • This review summarizes the most recent state of haemo-globin (Hb) research based on the literature and our own results. In particular, an attempt is made to form a unified picture for haemoglobin function by reconciling the cooperative oxygen binding with the stabilization of the bound dioxygen in aqueous solvent. The HbA molecule contains two types ofabcontacts. One type is thea1b2or a2b1 contacts, called sliding contacts, and these are strongly associated with the cooperative binding of O2to the a2b2 tetramer. ...

  • Fluorescent and colored trinitrophenylated (TNP) analogs of ATP and GTP can interact with nucleotide-requiring enzymes and proteins as a substitute for the parent nucleo-tide. These analogs have strong binding affinities for most nucleotide-requiring systems. Their bindings are easily detected by absorption and fluorescence changes in the visi-ble region.Recent years have seendramatic developments in the application of the TNP nucleotide analogs as spectro-scopic probes for the study on the nucleotide-interacting properties of various enzymes and proteins including their mutants.

  • Proteins participate in complex sets of interactions that represent the mech-anistic foundation for much of the physiology and function of the cell. These protein–protein interactions are organized into exquisitely complex networks. The architecture of protein–protein interaction networks was recently proposed to be scale-free, with most of the proteins having only one or two connections but with relatively fewer ‘hubs’ possessing tens, hundreds or more links.

  • Serpins are the largest family of protease inhibitors and are fundamental for the control of proteolysis in multicellular eukaryotes. Most eukaryote serpins inhibit serine or cysteine proteases, however, noninhibitory mem-bers have been identified that perform diverse functions in processes such as hormone delivery and tumour metastasis. More recently inhibitory ser-pins have been identified in prokaryotes and unicellular eukaryotes, never-theless, the precise molecular targets of these molecules remains to be identified....
