The ever-growing process of globalization, the open-door policy to imports, and the obvious shift to buyer's market have thrown new demands and challenges on these enterprises. Given these opportunities and challenges provided by the emerging realities, the enterprises have now to match markets with products and other corporate resources more effectively and efficiently to strengthen their competitive advantage.

While interaction operates on impressions, people are often naturally (or neurotically) motivated to suppress their own desires in order to please others (Rank 1932; Moustakas 1972). In other words, they seek to create a good impression. Social conformity, or collective action, relies on this behavior. The internal need to conform and the fear of perceived social gatekeepers creates a mechanism for society to be regulated by social norms.

THE PRESIDENT OF LOCKHEED AIRCRAFT CORPORATION and Vice President Lyndon Johnson agreed to end Lockheed’s workforce segregation on May 25, 1961. Looking back, this contract, which was announced with great fanfare at the White House, signified far more than the public acknowledgment of systematic racial segregation in employment. It illustrated the leading role that prominent corporations were beginning to embrace by hiring and promoting the widest range of workers in this country.

The lack of human resource capacity is by far the greatest barrier to overall health sector delivery and has been recognized as a major constraint in attaining the health-related Millennium Development Goals. With 0.03 doctors and 0.21 nurses per 1000 inhabitants, 8 Mozambique has one of the lowest health worker densities in Africa. This is as a result of low pre-service training and recruitment, increased attrition, and rapidly-changing health needs. Health staff distribution around the country still shows considerable regional asymmetries.

PHI has often financed the delivery of larger treatment volumes by offering higher payments to providers. Financial incentives linked to payment mechanisms exert a direct impact upon doctors’ productivity.32 This has contributed to a growth in the volumes of private hospital treatments in several countries where doctors have both public and private sector engagements, as in Australia and Ireland (Colombo and Tapay, 2003 and 2004b).
