Mycorrhizal fungus
-
Mycorrhizal symbiosis is one of the most fundamental types of mutualistic plant-microbe interaction. Among the many classes of mycorrhizae, the arbuscular mycorrhizae have the most general symbiotic style and the longest history. However, the genomes of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi are not well characterized due to difficulties in cultivation and genetic analysis. In this study, we sequenced the genome of the AM fungus Rhizophagus clarus HR1, compared the sequence with the genome sequence of the model species R.

Small RNAs (sRNAs) are short non-coding RNA molecules (20–30 nt) that regulate gene expression at transcriptional or post-transcriptional levels in many eukaryotic organisms, through a mechanism known as RNA interference (RNAi).

The influence of soil moisture on the infection, hyphal development and uptake of P of a VA mycorrhizal fungus Glomus fasciculatum in Quinoa was studied at four different moisture levels (-0.2; -0.6; -1.2 and -2.4 MPa). Maximum increase in dry weight was observed at -0.2 MPa level. There was a proportionate increase in total P content in shoot and root of a plant at decreased moisture levels.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AM fungi) have been found associated with a wide variety of agricultural and horticultural crops, but in legumes it occurs widely. AM fungi are cosmopolitan and ubiquitous in nature under different ecosystems. Different Mungbean growing areas of the Punjab were surveyed to observe the AM fungus colonization with Mungbean and spore population in rhizosphere soil of the crop.

Below-ground linkage between plant and fungal communities is one of the major drivers of terrestrial ecosystem dynamics. However, we still have limited knowledge of how such plant–fungus associations vary in their community-scale properties depending on fungal functional groups and geographic locations.

Greenhouse experiment was conducted to assess the soil biochemical change patterns in soils of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus (AMF)-inoculated and uninoculated maize plants fertilized with varying levels of P and Zn. Soil samples were collected for mycorrhizal spores, microbial communities, available micronutrients and phosphorus (P) contents besides organic and biomass carbon (BMC), soil enzymes and glomalin. Major portion of Fe and Zn fractionations was found to occur in the residual form.

Plants are in permanent contact with various microorganisms and are always impacted by them. To better understand the first steps of a plant’s recognition of soil-borne microorganisms, the early release of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from roots of Medicago truncatula in response to the symbiont Rhizophagus irregularis or the pathogenic oomycete Aphanomyces euteiches was analysed. More than 90 compounds were released from roots as detected by an untargeted gas chromatography-mass spectrometry approach.

A green house nursery study was conducted to assess the interaction between arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus, a nitrogen fixing bacterium, Glomus geosporum, Azotobacter chroococcum, and a mycorrhiza helper bacterium (MHB), Bacillus coagulans, in soil and their consequent effect on growth and nutrition of Melia azedarach L. seedlings.

Contamination of soil and ground water by chromium (Cr), due to its wide industrial use, has become a serious source of concern over the past decade. In this study a glasshouse experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of the mycorrhizal fungus Glomus intraradices on Cr toxicity in maize plants.
